The Doctor: Stress (and Hello!)
If the ship had landed a bit closer or the customers inside the café been a little less chatty, they might have heard the distinctive whirling-wheezing-grinding sound, warning them of Margate’s newest arrival. As it is, the thin man in the brown overcoat bursting into the café and stopping abruptly a few paces into the room comes as a surprise. The stranger glances around the space, eyes narrowing, adjusting to the change from the sunny seaside to the interior lighting.

"No..." he scoffs, heavy with skepticism, before turning around and jogging back out the door as quickly as his trainers will carry him.

Only moments pass before he re-enters the café.

"It can't be..." he murmurs and, squinting again, pulls a set of glasses from an inside suit pocket, puts them on, pushing them up the bridge of his nose with his index finger.

He wanders further into the café this time, roaming and examining the entryway, the counter, the tables. "Am I...?" he murmurs. He looks around and grabs a cup of coffee practically from the lips of the poor individual who happened to be closest to him. He sniffs the contents of the mug first, then sticks his fingertip into the beverage and licks the liquid off. He grimaces as he swallows, but the grimace quickly changes into a grin. "Oh, I am. I am in Margate again. Brilliant! Just brilliant! I had forgotten all about this place!"

He frowns suddenly and sinks into a chair, continuing his conversation with himself. "But how could I have forgotten...... it's like... it's like, like there's a perception filter on the whole town!" He snaps his fingers. "Yes, that’s exactly what it’s like! When you're here, you're aware of the place, and when you're not, you don't even think about it."

He runs a hand through his hair, musing, "But why would anyone put a perception filter on a Margate...? That would take so much energy... and what would the point be..." He trails off, hand midway through his hair, eyes widening, suddenly aware of the crowd of people sitting in the café.

A wide smile spreads across his face, which, in combination with his now bigger-than-ever hair results in a slightly-crazed look. "Oh, hello!!! Now, who do we have here? Who is present tonight?" He gets to his feet and begins circulating through the tables.

"Ahh, Caprica Six!" he calls out, walking over to the blonde. He winks and smiles, though the smile doesn’t quite extend to his eyes. "You're looking lovely as always!" He turns and his gaze comes to rest on a dark-haired man. "Alex Krycek!" he exclaims. "Ha! No one’s killed you yet! Amazing!"

He crosses the room, meandering among the tables. "And Professor McGonagall! Hello, there!" He smiles, fondly. "Oh, the mug you gave me -- now that I think about it, still have it! And I'll have you know -- it survived a trip to the end of the Earth."

"Survived a few different endings, actually, come to think of it," he murmurs, already walking away from her.

"And Ianto Jones!" He stares at Ianto for a moment, before saying quite seriously, "I have so much to catch up on with you."

"Say, is Holmes around…" he abruptly asks no one in particular. "Had another edition for him to sign…" he murmurs, looking around the crowd. "Ah-ha! There is he is! Hello!" He waves, then stands at the front of the room, surveying the group. "Look at all of you! A few new faces, but looks like the whole gang's here! It's like... a reunion! Well, a reunion for me... Unless, you've all left, too, and somehow we've all just happened to return, right now, this very day. Say, what day is it?" He grins, positively gleeful. "Do we still have topics to discuss? I loved those chats! Is there a discussion topic right now, hmm?"

"Ah, what’s that? Stress?" he asks as someone calls out from the back. "Ah, stress!" He grins with realization, commenting, "That's what we were talking about when I left! See! I told you I'd be back in ten minutes! Same as ever!"

"So, stress..." He thinks a moment, brow furrowed. "Well, a friend of mine claims I insult other species when I'm stressed. Oh, and I'm rude. Sometimes I get more rude when I'm stressed. Things like 'My, doesn't that dress just make her look like a Krillitane.' and 'Well, how stupid could they possibly be?' just sort of fall out of my mouth. I honestly don't mean to say them and I know, I know, it's probably not the best coping mechanism, it just sorta… happens…" he trails off, smile fading, finally noticing some blank stares and a few of the customers regarding him apprehensively.

"What?"

His expression melts into one of confusion and he repeats the question, more defensively this time. "What?"

His eyes widen and he shakes his head rapidly. "Oh! Oh, no, no, no! No, don't worry! Sorry for the confusion. Just got a new face," he says with a grin. "Bit of trouble with absorbing the time vortex. Well, my friend, Rose, had some trouble with the time vortex, then I..." he breaks off, face falling. "But she's gone..." He sighs, wearily. "It's a long story."

"But I promise, it's really me. I just regenerated recently."

"Still not ginger..." he muses. "Though I did just save a red-haired bride... Well, saved her and Christmas… and the Earth..." he adds off-handedly. "But look, even though I have changed, I'm still me."

He grins again, his tone gentler now, "I'm still just 'The Doctor.'"

*nods, looking down*
Right, well, um...
*rubs the back of his neck*
I may be responsible for some of the rift's instability...

Well... *tips his head side-to-side, not agreeing but not disagreeing*
*inhales deeply*
I wouldn't be so sure about that...
*pauses*
*quietly*
On one occasion, I sorta... let a species... through... The rift was closed by a girl, Gwyneth, but all that activity certainly wasn't the best thing for that area...

"We opened it, twice. Once to get Jack and Tosh, another person who works at Torchwood, back from 1941. And again to try and fix the problems that opening in the first time had caused. And we released a demon who had been trapped under the rift. Abaddon."

Nice place Cardiff. Definitely couldn't have asked for a lovelier place for refueling.

"Yes, how does that work? I mean, we can measure Rift energy, but there's no way to harness it. It's not like heat or light or magnetism or anything. How do you use it?"

(Reply to this) (Parent) (Thread)

[info]just_thedoctor
2008-04-07 07:30 pm UTC (link)
Ahhh... *nods*
*grins* Well, you see, if you had Gallifreyan technology, then you'd be able to harness the energy.
*continues on*
Basically... *looks around the cafe, grabs a mug and a coffee carafe from a nearby table* So, basically, let's say the mug is the TARDIS and the coffee is energy... *trails off, brow furrowed a bit* And, the space in here... *gestures vaguely in front of them, coffee sloshing in the carafe* ...is the Space-Time Vortex.

Now, the Heart of the TARDIS... *holds up the mug* ...is a massive energy collector. In the past as long as we were traveling in the Space-Time Vortex... *begins "flying" the TARDIS-mug around in front of them* ...we'd be connected to the Eye of Harmony -- our power source -- and the Heart would be soaking all that Artron energy in... *starts pouring coffee into the mug while continuing to move it about* ...but that was before... *pauses, lowering the mug and the coffee* Well, before the end of Gallifrey.
*clears his throat*
So, nowadays, the only places we can collect fuel are temporal instabilities, like the Cardiff Rift. *place the carafe on the table, then the attempts to balance the mug on the carafe, eventually gives up and place the mug on the table* I just park the TARDIS on top of it, it uses Chronon Transduction to soak the energy up and in a day or two we're all filled up and ready to travel again. *grins at Ianto* Stores enough to keep us going for a little while.
And...
*adds quickly*
Generally it's less messy than... this... *gestures vaguely to the coffee he's spilled in the process of demonstrating*

"So it really is like just filling it up with petrol, then? I mean, the basic theory of it? And it's not that the energy can't be captured, just that we don't have any technology yet that uses space-time energy. Like....there was always light energy, but it's only recently that we've developed solar-powered machines."

"Your TARDIS, all the TARDISes, were connected to the Eye of Harmony back on Gallifrey, regardless of their position in time or space? What about inter-dimensional travel; you mentioned that used to be possible?"

He puzzles about this for a few moments. "Technically, though, space-time energy would exist everywhere there's space time, which really is almost everywhere. So shouldn't you be able to fuel up anywhere? Why do you need anomalies?"

Oh, gods, you went and got him going again. :D

(Reply to this) (Parent) (Thread)

*grins*
Oh, yes! Just like filling it up with petrol.

*nods*
Yes, you see, essentially, the Eye of Harmony on Gallifrey created Artron Energy which it then, sorta... spewed out into the Space-Time Vortex. So, any TARDIS in the Vortex could link into the Artron Energy and store it and make it usable for the ship.

See... *brow furrows slightly* That's another thing that makes this Margate so...weird. Technically, power can only be used in the universe within which it is collected -- doesn't work in parallel universes... So being that my power worked when I left -- I'm not sure parallel universe is the proper term for this place.

Well, since the Eye of Harmony is no longer in existence, the production of Artron Energy has declined and it's just more readily available in locations of high temporal activity, like anomalies.

Personally, I agree with Ianto on his last question (regarding: why need anomalies?)... However, the Whoniverse guide seems to indicate anomalies are the only refueling option, though without much explanation... :/

He frowns. "That seems rather imprecise. What if some other culture developed time-travel technology, or some other technology that used space-time energy? Couldn't they have stolen that from your Eye of Harmony, then?"

"So you mean if I was for some reason to buy petrol here, and take it back to where I came from, it wouldn't work in my car? Assuming this is a parallel universe, which you suggest it isn't. I didn't know about energy only working in the universe it comes from, though. That doesn't make a lot of sense, because even if the molecules had different chiralities, which is the only reason I can think of, any energy source should be usable in half of the parallel dimensions. And if that was true, how would you even be able to travel between dimensions? I mean, you'd fill up your TARDIS with Artron energy, bounce over to another universe, and then what, be stuck because the energy wouldn't work in a parallel universe? That doesn't make any sense at all."

"So is it just the Rift, or any kind of anomaly? I mean, time slows down as you approach a black hole, does that count?"

Silly Whoniverse! They clearly need to consult me on these things. :D Also, sorry for the rambling again. He just...gets to thinking about things.

*considers*
Well...
*considers further*
Well...
*concedes, nodding*
Yeah, I suppose they could.
*muses*
Wonder if old Rassilon or Omega accounted for that...

*nods*
Well... that's sorta the idea with parallel universes, yes. But you see, say, your TARDIS is all fueled up here then you go to a different universe... As long as you don't run out of your own fuel -- that which you brought with you -- you're fine. But try putting parallel world fuel into the ship and you won't even be able to dematerialize.

*shrugs*
Well, fault lines between dimensions, scars on reality, time rifts... Things like that. The Cardiff rift is pretty convenient. Plus... *grins* It brings back memories every time I'm there!

*g* Even if they consulted prior canon they'd be better off! Or at least less contradictory!
*hugs Ianto*

He nods. "I'm guessing it never became an issue, at least, or you wouldn't have to think about it. That's good."

"Ah, ok. So fuel works on machines that come from the same universe, even though they might be in a different dimension on the time. Just fuels from one universe don't work on machines from another universe." He frowns, thinking a bit. "What about food. I mean, the body is a sort of machine, and food is its energy source. And everyone here has been able to live on the food here. So does this rule not apply to food, or is that proof that this isn't a parallel dimension?"

"So any kind of anomaly, then. Are there a lot of them on earth?" He grins broadly. "Good! Always glad to hear that people like it!"

No... At least not to my knowledge. *shrugs* Of course, the Eye of Harmony was so old, people had forgotten it had existed in my day. So it's hard to say what happened back when it was first created.

*smile spreads across his face*
Very good... *grin widens* You are brilliant, you know that?
*more serious*
Anyway, food... In my experience food doesn't seem to have the same problem as fuel. So, unfortunately we can't exactly use that to prove or disprove our our location.

*smiles at Ianto's reaction*
*shrugs, off-handed* Oh, I don't know. There are enough of them on Earth. Enough not to worry to much about refueling.

"Wait, so was your TARDIS also fueled by the Eye of Harmony, even if people didn't know what it was? Or had they found an alternate energy source by your time?"

He grins broadly. "Thank you! I do my best." He nods, considering. "Well, you'd obviously know more about that than I would. It doesn't really make sense, though. Different chemical structures, maybe? Or different ways of breaking it down and using it?"

He's extremely interested to hear this. "Really? Other rifts, or some other form of anomaly?"

(Reply to this) (Parent) (Thread)

[info]just_thedoctor

Oh, no... *shakes his head* There was no alternative source. And it wasn't just my TARDIS fueled by the Eye of Harmony -- the Eye was the energy source for the entire planet! It just happened that Rassilon had placed the Eye beneath the Panopticon so long ago everyone had forgotten about it. *off-handedly* The Master and I sorta inadvertently rediscovered it.

*considers a moment*
You know, honestly, I haven't given it much thought.
*contemplates further*
You know, if I'd been starving in a parallel world, I probably would have given it more attention...

Oh, other anomalies... *thinks a moment, shrugs* Could be other rifts, but not ones that I know about. Anyway, there's a time fissure beneath a house my friend Sarah Jane visited. And my friend Rose... *trails off* *clears his throat* She sort-of created a wound in time. *laughs once* Nearly caused the end of the world, just to save her dad. *quietly* But that's gone now, too. He patched things up in the end... *trails off, glum*

He stares at the Doctor, incredulous. "You mean you had an energy source, big enough to power an entire planet and no one wondered what the hell it is?!.

He nods. "It's an odd sort of thing to think about, I guess. But...you just brought it up, and then my brain just...took it and ran with it. It does that."

Looks over at the Doctor sympathetically as he talks about Rose. "She sounds like a wonderful woman, Doctor."

It was the nucleus of a black hole, by the way... to answer your question.

Oh, no! It makes perfect sense as a topic worthy of contemplation! *grins* Nothing wrong with your brain running with it...

"That's, I'm sorry, that's just utterly ridiculous. How the hell do you just take something for granted like that? What if it had stopped running one day? All right, not much of a problem if it's a black hole, but you didn't know that."

He grins, pleased. "Thanks. I just tend to...think about things like that, that a lot of other people don't care about."

Oh, no! It wasn't so much that we took it granted -- we literally didn't know it existed. Everyone thought it was just a myth, a legend passed on down from the Old Times. Which were... old. Obviously. *thinks a moment* It would be like...like someone on Earth discovering Atlantis.

We found it quite by accident. Of course, The Master had it worked out ahead of everybody... *grins, brightly, off-handedly* I was running for President of Gallifrey at the time!

*grins*
Yeah... Me too, sometimes.

*quieter*
I hope so.
*adds quickly*
Though I suppose it would depend on what was at stake...
