The Doctor: Stress (and Hello!)
If the ship had landed a bit closer or the customers inside the café been a little less chatty, they might have heard the distinctive whirling-wheezing-grinding sound, warning them of Margate’s newest arrival. As it is, the thin man in the brown overcoat bursting into the café and stopping abruptly a few paces into the room comes as a surprise. The stranger glances around the space, eyes narrowing, adjusting to the change from the sunny seaside to the interior lighting.

"No..." he scoffs, heavy with skepticism, before turning around and jogging back out the door as quickly as his trainers will carry him.

Only moments pass before he re-enters the café.

"It can't be..." he murmurs and, squinting again, pulls a set of glasses from an inside suit pocket, puts them on, pushing them up the bridge of his nose with his index finger.

He wanders further into the café this time, roaming and examining the entryway, the counter, the tables. "Am I...?" he murmurs. He looks around and grabs a cup of coffee practically from the lips of the poor individual who happened to be closest to him. He sniffs the contents of the mug first, then sticks his fingertip into the beverage and licks the liquid off. He grimaces as he swallows, but the grimace quickly changes into a grin. "Oh, I am. I am in Margate again. Brilliant! Just brilliant! I had forgotten all about this place!"

He frowns suddenly and sinks into a chair, continuing his conversation with himself. "But how could I have forgotten...... it's like... it's like, like there's a perception filter on the whole town!" He snaps his fingers. "Yes, that’s exactly what it’s like! When you're here, you're aware of the place, and when you're not, you don't even think about it."

He runs a hand through his hair, musing, "But why would anyone put a perception filter on a Margate...? That would take so much energy... and what would the point be..." He trails off, hand midway through his hair, eyes widening, suddenly aware of the crowd of people sitting in the café.

A wide smile spreads across his face, which, in combination with his now bigger-than-ever hair results in a slightly-crazed look. "Oh, hello!!! Now, who do we have here? Who is present tonight?" He gets to his feet and begins circulating through the tables.

"Ahh, Caprica Six!" he calls out, walking over to the blonde. He winks and smiles, though the smile doesn’t quite extend to his eyes. "You're looking lovely as always!" He turns and his gaze comes to rest on a dark-haired man. "Alex Krycek!" he exclaims. "Ha! No one’s killed you yet! Amazing!"

He crosses the room, meandering among the tables. "And Professor McGonagall! Hello, there!" He smiles, fondly. "Oh, the mug you gave me -- now that I think about it, still have it! And I'll have you know -- it survived a trip to the end of the Earth."

"Survived a few different endings, actually, come to think of it," he murmurs, already walking away from her.

"And Ianto Jones!" He stares at Ianto for a moment, before saying quite seriously, "I have so much to catch up on with you."

"Say, is Holmes around…" he abruptly asks no one in particular. "Had another edition for him to sign…" he murmurs, looking around the crowd. "Ah-ha! There is he is! Hello!" He waves, then stands at the front of the room, surveying the group. "Look at all of you! A few new faces, but looks like the whole gang's here! It's like... a reunion! Well, a reunion for me... Unless, you've all left, too, and somehow we've all just happened to return, right now, this very day. Say, what day is it?" He grins, positively gleeful. "Do we still have topics to discuss? I loved those chats! Is there a discussion topic right now, hmm?"

"Ah, what’s that? Stress?" he asks as someone calls out from the back. "Ah, stress!" He grins with realization, commenting, "That's what we were talking about when I left! See! I told you I'd be back in ten minutes! Same as ever!"

"So, stress..." He thinks a moment, brow furrowed. "Well, a friend of mine claims I insult other species when I'm stressed. Oh, and I'm rude. Sometimes I get more rude when I'm stressed. Things like 'My, doesn't that dress just make her look like a Krillitane.' and 'Well, how stupid could they possibly be?' just sort of fall out of my mouth. I honestly don't mean to say them and I know, I know, it's probably not the best coping mechanism, it just sorta… happens…" he trails off, smile fading, finally noticing some blank stares and a few of the customers regarding him apprehensively.

"What?"

His expression melts into one of confusion and he repeats the question, more defensively this time. "What?"

His eyes widen and he shakes his head rapidly. "Oh! Oh, no, no, no! No, don't worry! Sorry for the confusion. Just got a new face," he says with a grin. "Bit of trouble with absorbing the time vortex. Well, my friend, Rose, had some trouble with the time vortex, then I..." he breaks off, face falling. "But she's gone..." He sighs, wearily. "It's a long story."

"But I promise, it's really me. I just regenerated recently."

"Still not ginger..." he muses. "Though I did just save a red-haired bride... Well, saved her and Christmas… and the Earth..." he adds off-handedly. "But look, even though I have changed, I'm still me."

He grins again, his tone gentler now, "I'm still just 'The Doctor.'"

*her eyebrows fly up*
You're not? But you- You seemed- *pauses, not sure what it was about him that had her convinced he was a wizard, but it was definitely something*

*nods largely* Yes. And I'm only five.
*leans forward to him, voice dropping to a whisper* How old?

*returns the smile easily- she likes him a lot already* Yes! Metamorphmagus. It means I can change what I look like!

Oh yes. Of course. I shall be around all day! I can't wait. She's adoring him!

*shakes his head, gently*
No, no. I'm not wizard. I'm a Time Lord though. *hesitantly* Have you heard of Time Lords?

*whispers in return*
I'm 900. That's this many... *holds up both his hands, all fingers extended* ...90 times. *nods somberly*

Oh... I see... *nods*
*eyes twinkling*
Well, that... that is really cool! I have never met someone who is a Metamorphmagus before. *grins* So do you get to change your hair color to match your outfit everyday?

*pauses then her eyes go wide again*
You mean like Dr Who? Daddy and I watch Dr Who and there are Time Lords there!

Oooooh. You're even older than Pr'fessor Dumbledore and Granny!

*giggles and nods then climbs over to perch on his lap with her bear, one ear of which gets pushed up against the Doctor's nose*
Aaaaanytime I want.

*blinks*
Ohhh... *nods* So you're another one of the people who has Doctor Who on the telly, hmm? I've heard of a few people watching that show...

*laughs*
I'm older than quite a few people.

*eyes widen, surprised by her climbing onto his lap*
*tries to turn his head so he can see Dora, but not have the bear up his nose*
*smiles*
Well that sounds like a lot of fun. I've sort of changed my look a few times, too, but I can't really pick whenever I want...

*nods* Yes! On the telly! Only he's got big curly hair! *demonstrates this with her own hair* And a long striped scarf and you've not got those. *looks around to make sure she didn't miss a scarf as the curls straighten out again*

*a bit awed* Are you older than God?

*curiously* Why not?

*grins, fondly*
Well, no, I've not got those... Surely clothes don't make the Time Lord though! *muses to himself* Wonder where that scarf got to...

*eyes widen, shakes his head*
No, no, not quite that old.

*grins*
Cause I'm not a super-special metamorphmagus... *taps her lightly on the nose with his index finger* ...like you are.

*curiously* But I thought he was one of the only ones. But you're one too? Have you met him?

Oh. *giggles* My grandpapa says that about some of the people at his church but he's just joking.

*brightly* But I am! *wrinkles her noses happily then frowns a bit as it sticks like that* *Goes cross-eyed looking it* Oh no.

*nods*
Yep, yep, in fact I have met him... Quite a long time ago though.

*grins*
Your grandpa sounds pretty funny... Say... *curiously* ...is your grandpa a metamorphmagus?

*eyes widen, concerned*
Oh, no! Can you get it unstuck?

Oooh. Daddy likes his scarf a lot and said he might have to learn to knit to make one like it and Mummy just laughs at him.

*giggles and shakes her head* Nooo. Grandpapa is a vicar. *says this like it is clearly not compatible with being a metamorphmagus but equally exciting*

*huffs and reaches up to tug on her nose a bit, still cross-eyed*
*frowns as nothing happens and she closes her eyes tightly to concentrate as she wriggles her nose with her fingers*
*Makes a small sound as it frees... then elongates rather comically, pinched at the end*
Oh no!!

Well, it sounds like your father has excellent taste in scarves. *nods slowly* In fact, I would like to meet someone with such excellent taste... *casually* Say, is your father around the cafe here? Hmm?

Ohhh... *nods* I see. Do you have a big family?

*eyes widen, tries not to smile*
Oh, dear! Looks like you're still working a few of the kinks out... *nods, serious* It happens to me when I change my look, too. *adds quickly* Well... *glances at her nose* ...not quite like that, but... all the same... *curiously, genuinely interested* Are noses harder to change than hair?

*giggles and nods* He does but Mummy doesn't think so. I like all the colours too!
*shakes her head, smile fading* No. He didn't- he didn't come with me. Xellos and Iago and Mr Holmes are takin' care of me now. *points at them*

Nooo. It's just Mummy and Daddy and me and Q at my house. But there's Grandpapa and Gramma and Auntie Julie! And Sirius's my cousin! And he's nice. And Uncle Alphard too. But the rest of Mummy's family's mean and not really family.

*sighs theatrically and stares down her now long nose then pushes at it experimentally- but nothing happens*
Yeah- 'specially when it's all stretched out. Once I was snotty and had to blow my nose and and it blew up like a balloon!

*grins*
*smile fades as hers does, pats her on the back gently*
Well, I'm sorry to hear he didn't come along. *quieter, a bit darker* I wish my family came along with me too.
Still... *gives her a small grin* Xellos and Iago and Mr. Holmes are all pretty brilliant. I bet they are taking excellent care of you. *brow furrows slightly, muses to himself* Hopefully not in a "Three Men and a Baby" kind of way... *brow furrows more* ...If Xellos even counts as a man...

*nods, listening intently*
*raises an eyebrow*
You and your mummy and daddy and... Q, did you say?

*grins*
*grin fades, quietly, gently*
Does it hurt when it changes unexpectedly like that?

*pats his shoulder sympathetically*
Who's your family?
*nods*
They are! We made pasta! And I'm not a baby. I'm five.

*giggles* Q's our dog! He followed Daddy home and we kept him!

*shakes her head* No. It doesn't hurt. It tickles sometimes though.

*smiles at her when she pats his shoulder*
Oh, my granddaughter, Susan, she used to travel with me...
*shrugs,
But you know how it is... *small grin* ...or one day you will. *serious, a bit sadly* Eventually you grow up and traveling with your old grandfather just isn't as fun as it used to be and you'd rather settle down and start your own family. Just the way it works.

*grins, then nods, somber*
I know you're not a baby. Five is much older than a baby. I'm sure Xellos will keep you well fed.

*smiles broadly*
Oh, a dog! I used to have a dog! K-9... *grins* He was a good dog. *a bit distant, wistful* A friend of mine is watching him now.

*chuckles, then smiles*
Good. I'm glad it doesn't hurt.

*hesitates a moment, then continues*
Say... Dora... I was wondering... Do you like playing dress-up?

Ooooh. Was she nice? I know a Susan who's nice. She works with Mummy.
*brows knit and she shifts uncomfortably at the talk of starting a family, not responding*

And Iago! M'not allowed to cook though. Or help. M'not old enough and things break.

*smiles at him* Can you not have a dog? You could get another dog maybe?

*looks at him curiously at the question but nods* Uh huh! Mummy has red shoes she lets me wear. Mummy has lots of red shoes but some are special. Do you want to play dress up?

*is a bit disturbed at the idea of Doctor-Dora Dress up* :P

*smiles, fondly*
Yes, she was very nice. She took good care of me while we were traveling.
*notices the change in Dora's demeanor, pats her gently on the back*

*grins*
Ah, well, one day you'll be old enough to help. Time passes faster than you think!

*considers*
I could get another one maybe, yeah...
*shrugs*
But, it's hard to replace dogs. *gently* And my friend needed him more.

*eyes widen, shakes his head, firmly*
Ah, no. No, I think 900 is a bit too old for dress-up...
*smiles*
But! If Xellos or Iago or Mr. Holmes say it's okay for you to visit, I have a wardrobe with lots of costumes you could play with.
Or... well... *eyes lose their sparkle* ...a friend of mine who was traveling with me, well, she left some things. I don't think I'll be needing them any more. *forces a grin* They'd be a bit big for you to actually wear, but you could have them to play with at Mr. Holmes' house, if you like... *grins, more successfully genuine this time* She had some fun shoes!

Um, yeah... The Doctor will not be participating in dress-up with a five-year-old, cause that would be really kinda... creepy.
Sometimes The Luggage likes to play with the shoes though! ;-)

Good! I take care of my Daddy sometimes when he comes home from work!
*distant smile at the pat but she quiets*

*nods soberly* Dogs are family too and you can't replace family. But sometimes it's okay to have more family!

*giggles into her hand* It's never to old for dress-up! It would be fun! You could wear some of my clothes! Or we could al play in your wardrobe! With Mr Holmes and Xellos too! Mr Holmes dresses as a woman sometimes!

*brows knit* Did all her clothes grow too big for her too, like mine did?

It is. But it won't stop Dora from trying :P
Also- poor Holmes. He disguises himself as a woman once- and tells the 5 year old and suddenly it's "he dresses as a woman sometimes". *headdesk*

That... *he nods seriously, still smiling* Is a very good-girl thing to do. I bet your Daddy appreciated it very much.

*smiles, but equally sober*
Quite right. Quite right.

*eyes widen, blinks*
Did he? Mr. Holmes?
*shakes his head, firmly*
Never mind.
*gentler*
But... your clothes wouldn't fit me! And I like my clothes... *gestures to his suit, smiling* I picked them out myself!

*brow furrows, slightly confused*
*smile fades, shakes his head*
No, no... She just... *trails off*
*shakes his head again, sighs*
It's complicated.

hee! Well the luggage did force Nine into joining him in dress-up one time! :-)
*pets Holmes* *pets Dora just cause she's adorable*
