The Doctor: Stress (and Hello!)
If the ship had landed a bit closer or the customers inside the café been a little less chatty, they might have heard the distinctive whirling-wheezing-grinding sound, warning them of Margate’s newest arrival. As it is, the thin man in the brown overcoat bursting into the café and stopping abruptly a few paces into the room comes as a surprise. The stranger glances around the space, eyes narrowing, adjusting to the change from the sunny seaside to the interior lighting.

"No..." he scoffs, heavy with skepticism, before turning around and jogging back out the door as quickly as his trainers will carry him.

Only moments pass before he re-enters the café.

"It can't be..." he murmurs and, squinting again, pulls a set of glasses from an inside suit pocket, puts them on, pushing them up the bridge of his nose with his index finger.

He wanders further into the café this time, roaming and examining the entryway, the counter, the tables. "Am I...?" he murmurs. He looks around and grabs a cup of coffee practically from the lips of the poor individual who happened to be closest to him. He sniffs the contents of the mug first, then sticks his fingertip into the beverage and licks the liquid off. He grimaces as he swallows, but the grimace quickly changes into a grin. "Oh, I am. I am in Margate again. Brilliant! Just brilliant! I had forgotten all about this place!"

He frowns suddenly and sinks into a chair, continuing his conversation with himself. "But how could I have forgotten...... it's like... it's like, like there's a perception filter on the whole town!" He snaps his fingers. "Yes, that’s exactly what it’s like! When you're here, you're aware of the place, and when you're not, you don't even think about it."

He runs a hand through his hair, musing, "But why would anyone put a perception filter on a Margate...? That would take so much energy... and what would the point be..." He trails off, hand midway through his hair, eyes widening, suddenly aware of the crowd of people sitting in the café.

A wide smile spreads across his face, which, in combination with his now bigger-than-ever hair results in a slightly-crazed look. "Oh, hello!!! Now, who do we have here? Who is present tonight?" He gets to his feet and begins circulating through the tables.

"Ahh, Caprica Six!" he calls out, walking over to the blonde. He winks and smiles, though the smile doesn’t quite extend to his eyes. "You're looking lovely as always!" He turns and his gaze comes to rest on a dark-haired man. "Alex Krycek!" he exclaims. "Ha! No one’s killed you yet! Amazing!"

He crosses the room, meandering among the tables. "And Professor McGonagall! Hello, there!" He smiles, fondly. "Oh, the mug you gave me -- now that I think about it, still have it! And I'll have you know -- it survived a trip to the end of the Earth."

"Survived a few different endings, actually, come to think of it," he murmurs, already walking away from her.

"And Ianto Jones!" He stares at Ianto for a moment, before saying quite seriously, "I have so much to catch up on with you."

"Say, is Holmes around…" he abruptly asks no one in particular. "Had another edition for him to sign…" he murmurs, looking around the crowd. "Ah-ha! There is he is! Hello!" He waves, then stands at the front of the room, surveying the group. "Look at all of you! A few new faces, but looks like the whole gang's here! It's like... a reunion! Well, a reunion for me... Unless, you've all left, too, and somehow we've all just happened to return, right now, this very day. Say, what day is it?" He grins, positively gleeful. "Do we still have topics to discuss? I loved those chats! Is there a discussion topic right now, hmm?"

"Ah, what’s that? Stress?" he asks as someone calls out from the back. "Ah, stress!" He grins with realization, commenting, "That's what we were talking about when I left! See! I told you I'd be back in ten minutes! Same as ever!"

"So, stress..." He thinks a moment, brow furrowed. "Well, a friend of mine claims I insult other species when I'm stressed. Oh, and I'm rude. Sometimes I get more rude when I'm stressed. Things like 'My, doesn't that dress just make her look like a Krillitane.' and 'Well, how stupid could they possibly be?' just sort of fall out of my mouth. I honestly don't mean to say them and I know, I know, it's probably not the best coping mechanism, it just sorta… happens…" he trails off, smile fading, finally noticing some blank stares and a few of the customers regarding him apprehensively.

"What?"

His expression melts into one of confusion and he repeats the question, more defensively this time. "What?"

His eyes widen and he shakes his head rapidly. "Oh! Oh, no, no, no! No, don't worry! Sorry for the confusion. Just got a new face," he says with a grin. "Bit of trouble with absorbing the time vortex. Well, my friend, Rose, had some trouble with the time vortex, then I..." he breaks off, face falling. "But she's gone..." He sighs, wearily. "It's a long story."

"But I promise, it's really me. I just regenerated recently."

"Still not ginger..." he muses. "Though I did just save a red-haired bride... Well, saved her and Christmas… and the Earth..." he adds off-handedly. "But look, even though I have changed, I'm still me."

He grins again, his tone gentler now, "I'm still just 'The Doctor.'"

Holmes merely nods, his arms still crossed, listening. When the man calling himself the Doctor mentions the TARDIS being homesick, his eyes widen slightly. Then, at the mention of the story, he blinks.

"Whatever remains, however improbable must be the truth. No one else was there!" he mutters. He peers closely at the Doctor's face. "But this must be impossible! How can in not be impossible." He shakes his head. "My sincere apologies Doctor, for doubting you."

Holmes is flabbergasted at this latest demonstration of Margate oddities. "I believe I will sit down, if you will forgive my bad manners." He pulls out a chair with a hand that shakes slightly and sits down heavily.

*shakes his head*
Nothing to worry about! Please do sit down!

*nods*
I know, it's a bit complicated... and, sounds a bit impossible.
*almost timidly*
But does it make some sense? Did I explain it well enough?

Holmes nods his thanks and takes out his pipe, which he lights with none-to-steady hands.

"Yes Doctor it does. I shan't ask how it's accomplished." He looks around for coffee. He needs some, motor oil or no.

"Oh yes," he attempts a smile, "you explained it very well. I just have no frame of reference for anything at all like this. It quite boggles my mind." He suddenly looks very tired.

Will get back to the great rat as soon as I write the next installment. ;)

Well... *leans back a bit, looking slightly awed* ...those are some words I never thought I'd hear... boggling Sherlock Holmes' mind.
*pauses, thinking a moment*
It's like... It's like saying something boggled my mind and, well, that's say something...
*reaches out, pats Holmes' shoulder, concerned*
Are you alright? You seem...weary...

*glee* :D

*Holmes manages a slight smile at the Doctor's words*

You must admit Doctor, it is not without due cause.

*his eyes close for an instant*

I shall be fine. It's just going to take some time to adjust to this. On top of everything else...it's a bit much. *wistfully* It makes me long for the peace of Tibet.

I did jot some notes, but they have inexplicably gone missing. I blame the cat. ;)

*grins brightly*
Ahhh, Tibet! I traveled...well, close to there once. With Marco Polo. *muses, frowning slightly*
Wasn't that peaceful actually...

*looks Holmes over critically*
*quieter, a bit calmer*
I'm sorry I gave you a shock.

Cats are often to blame.

*Holmes nods, not really surprised by this*

An intrepid soul Marco Polo. You must have had quite an adventure.

*he frowns*

Nor is it now, from what I understand. But I was speaking if their philosophy, not their politics.

Don't fret yourself Doctor. After all, to you, this must seem commonplace. Has it happened before?

Silly things! I should have something tomorrow.

*nods*
Yeah, it was quite an adventure. *off-handedly* Especially when he tried giving the TARDIS to Kublai Kahn...
*shrugs*
But you're right, a place with a peaceful philosophy. *quieter* Maybe I should try stopping by there again.

*grins*
Oh, yes! *beaming, almost proudly* I'm currently on my tenth regeneration!

*Holmes manages a smile, smoke swirling around his head*

Oh no! What did you do? And what was he like? Kublai Khan?

*he sighs*

I wish I could have stayed longer myself. But it seems that is not to be.

*he puffs on his pipe silently for a long moment*

I am quite glad I was sitting down for that Doctor. Is this something that all the Time Lords did, or are you unique in this respect?

And I must ask...does it hurt at all?

By the way, when I try to get to the Sumatra thread, my computer crashes. :( What would you like me to do? I'd be happy to post somewhere else if you'd like.

Kublai Khan... *shrugs* Ah, he was... old. *grins, chuckles* Of course, so was I at the time. *grin grows wider, fondly* We played backgammon and drank tea together! And... *expression turns more serious, leans back in his chair* ...as luck would have my companions and I foiled an attempt on the Khan's life, so we were given the TARDIS back.

*eyes widen*
Oh, no! No, we all regenerate. There's even laws about it -- twelve regenerations per Time Lord. Punishments for certain crimes can include deducting a regeneration. Likewise, sometimes people can be rewarded with extra. It's just another biological process to us.

Hurt?
*considers, shrugs*
Well, each time it's a bit different. Sometimes things can go a bit...wrong. Like this past time... *quieter* I went a bit... off. Crashlanded the TARDIS even. And then I collapsed!

Oh, no! Well, I went ahead and started a new post for it, over here. Hopefully that will work and we can just continue there?

Backgammon? I didn't know you played Doctor. Did he cheat?

*he blinks thoughtfully*

There are those who would say you shouldn't have saved his life.

*Holmes nods*

And? What happens after twelve?

Off? Don't you get used to it? *he's terribly curious* What happened? She wasn't damaged was she?

YAY! Thanks! That'll work out just fine. My computer has been a bit wonky lately and I can't figure out why. :(

*shakes his head*
No, he didn't cheat. *grins, a bit proud* I won most of the games! *more proud* Actually, had won 35 elephants with all of their trappings, 4000 white stallions, 25 tigers, the sacred tooth of the Buddha, and all the commerce from Burma for one year... *deflates a bit* Then I bet him the TARDIS -- trying to win it back -- and, of course, my luck ran out!

*quietly, serious*
But history was decided... He was going to die of gout.

*eyes widen slightly*
After twelve? Nothing. Death.

Different body changing to a different body each time... *shakes his head* No, there can often be surprises.

*hesitates a moment*
My friend, Rose... She... *quiet* She did something very brave. She absorbed all the energy of the space-time vortex -- she controlled all the universe for just a few moments.
*darker*
But it nearly killed her. I absorbed the energy from her, so she'd be safe. *shrugs* And I regenerated instead.
*trying to look a bit brighter*
The TARDIS came through okay... *rueful* ...despite me crashing her into the earth...

Cool! Yeah, my internet has been doing weird things too recently.
Oh, and I don't seem to be getting notifications, so I'll try to keep checking back.

*he chuckles*

Oh dear. But you prevailed in the end. Alls well that ends well.

Yes of course. I'm not saying you shouldn't have. I'm just commenting that there are those who would have chosen differently. If they had the choice.

*looks at the Doctor for a long moment*

It must come as something of a relief. Being finished at long long last.

*he spreads his hands*

I have no doubt. Do you get used to it? Is it easier by say, the fourth or fifth time around?

*blinks*

All the universe...*he shakes his head* I can well imagine it did. Thankfully you were able to save her. She sounds like a remarkable lady.

*relieved*

I am very pleased to hear she is doing well. I'm very fond of her you know. But tell me Doctor *he smiles*, how would she have dealt with the 35 elephants?

Whew! I'm glad it's not just me. I always think I must be doing something wrong.
OK.*sigh* Here's hoping this is just a fluke as well.

*nods, smiling*
Yes. Quite right.

Relief?
*shrugs*
It depends on the person, really. My best enemy stole extra regnerations, just so he could continue... But then, he sorted wasted some of this time.

*shakes his head*
No, you don't really get used to it. The fifth change was actually a particularly nasty one...

*quietly*
She was. *adds quickly* Is. *clears his throat* She still is a remarkable lady. Just not... here.

*smiles, a bit rueful*
Well, did I mention, since we landed back here, she's having some issues again. Sorta... stuck in the street, actually... *frowns slightly, muses* I should really get on moving her, so she stops blocking a lane... *to Holmes, grins* The elephants? Well, the TARDIS would have been fine with them. My companions on the other hand... *grins*

*hugs* No, not just you... And IJ seems particularly temperamental.
heh, That comment notification -- finally arrived late yesterday. *shakes head* Bizarre thing.

Bravo Doctor!

*briefly distracted*

'Best enemy'? I like that term Doctor. May I borrow it occasionally? *goes on* I have never understood why someone would want to live forever.

Really? And it's like that for all of you? I suppose it's necessary but it seems a rather awkward way to go about it. *he smiles* As if I have even the faintest idea what I'm talking about.

*reasonably*

Well no, not here. I'm sure you would have introduced her to us.

*torn between amusement and concern*

Oh dear! The poor TARDIS. Can she be moved? You're welcome to put her in my garden if you'd like Doctor. Should I call for a lorry?

*raises an eyebrow*

The TARDIS is self-cleaning yes? And I don't blame your companions. One elephant is quite enough. Maybe even more than enough occasionally.

I read it was something to do with exceeding bandwidth or some technical thing like that.
BAD craziness. And it's not even full moon!

*grins*
Certainly! Borrow away! I don't mind at all.

*small smile*
Of course I would have introduced you. *quiet, thoughtful* She would have been just as thrilled to meet you as I was.

*eyes widen*
In your garden? *hopeful, gleeful* Oh, could we really? I was just thinking of gathering a few people to help me shove her on to the sidewalk, but I bet she'd like a garden much better. Better air. *chatters away, thinking aloud* A lorry probably would be the best way to move her... As long as they're careful not to damage the exterior. And secure her probably... *a bit more serious, but just as hopeful* You really wouldn't mind a big blue box taking up some space?

Self-cleaning?
*blinks*
*slowly*
I hadn't thought of that... I was just thinking of the size, mostly, but that -- that's a really good point, Holmes.
*can't help but grin*
You sound like you have experience with elephants...?

*dips his head*

Thank you Doctor. You are most gracious.

*he smiles, pleased*

You flatter me Doctor. I would have been honoured to meet so courageous a lady.

The sidewalk. *tsks* Really Doctor! That's no place for the TARDIS. She is more than welcome in the garden and you are more than welcome to join us at the house whenever you wish.

*he chuckles*

Calm yourself Doctor. You shall oversee every aspect of the move.

*he pulls out a cell phone, but pauses before dialing*

I traveled through India on my way to Tibet. I am very well acquainted with elephants. Charming creatures but just a bit much in large numbers.

*he presses a button on the phone*

Rog? *he listens. No nothings come up. Keep the watch. I just have another job I need your help with. *he smiles* I need something moved. If you could get about six of your rugby teammates and a medium panel lorry? *he nods* I think six should be able to handle it. Yes, meet me outside The Seaside Cafe as soon as you can. I'll be outside waiting for you. Thanks Rog. Stay alert. *he disconnects and smiles at the Doctor* They'll be here as soon as they can. *he scratches his nose* I should have asked before Doctor, but just how heavy is the TARDIS? Do you think six men, eight if you include us, will be enough to move her?

Oh! Oh, really? Oh, thank you, Holmes! *nodding enthusiastically* She -- we would like that very, very much!!

*eyes widen when Holmes pulls out a cell phone*
*grins broadly, beaming*
*quietly delighted, as Holmes speaks to Rog*
Sherlock Holmes, rockin' the twentieth-century technology. Brilliant!

*nodding, when Holmes disconnects the call*
Oh, yes! Six or eight of us should be fine. I had about 12 blue aliens about this tall... *gestures to the height of the table* ...move it in the past. *pauses, blinks* Well, the future. Your future, my past. *shakes his head* Never mind, not the point. Anyway! *grinning again* I think we'll be fine. She is fairly indestructible --- even survived a topple off a cliff once -- but if we can prevent things from going topsy-turvy, that'd be magnificent.

*earnest*
Should we go outside to meet them?

*nods, still smiling*

They're quite handy in my line of work.

*shakes his head, vastly amused*

Then I am sure that eight Earthlings will have no trouble, whenever we move the TARDIS. And we shall be most careful. No dropping her on my watch!

By all means Doctor. *he picks up his cape* I fear for your heart otherwise. *he chuckles and gestures for the Doctor to precede him*
