The Doctor: Stress (and Hello!)
If the ship had landed a bit closer or the customers inside the café been a little less chatty, they might have heard the distinctive whirling-wheezing-grinding sound, warning them of Margate’s newest arrival. As it is, the thin man in the brown overcoat bursting into the café and stopping abruptly a few paces into the room comes as a surprise. The stranger glances around the space, eyes narrowing, adjusting to the change from the sunny seaside to the interior lighting.

"No..." he scoffs, heavy with skepticism, before turning around and jogging back out the door as quickly as his trainers will carry him.

Only moments pass before he re-enters the café.

"It can't be..." he murmurs and, squinting again, pulls a set of glasses from an inside suit pocket, puts them on, pushing them up the bridge of his nose with his index finger.

He wanders further into the café this time, roaming and examining the entryway, the counter, the tables. "Am I...?" he murmurs. He looks around and grabs a cup of coffee practically from the lips of the poor individual who happened to be closest to him. He sniffs the contents of the mug first, then sticks his fingertip into the beverage and licks the liquid off. He grimaces as he swallows, but the grimace quickly changes into a grin. "Oh, I am. I am in Margate again. Brilliant! Just brilliant! I had forgotten all about this place!"

He frowns suddenly and sinks into a chair, continuing his conversation with himself. "But how could I have forgotten...... it's like... it's like, like there's a perception filter on the whole town!" He snaps his fingers. "Yes, that’s exactly what it’s like! When you're here, you're aware of the place, and when you're not, you don't even think about it."

He runs a hand through his hair, musing, "But why would anyone put a perception filter on a Margate...? That would take so much energy... and what would the point be..." He trails off, hand midway through his hair, eyes widening, suddenly aware of the crowd of people sitting in the café.

A wide smile spreads across his face, which, in combination with his now bigger-than-ever hair results in a slightly-crazed look. "Oh, hello!!! Now, who do we have here? Who is present tonight?" He gets to his feet and begins circulating through the tables.

"Ahh, Caprica Six!" he calls out, walking over to the blonde. He winks and smiles, though the smile doesn’t quite extend to his eyes. "You're looking lovely as always!" He turns and his gaze comes to rest on a dark-haired man. "Alex Krycek!" he exclaims. "Ha! No one’s killed you yet! Amazing!"

He crosses the room, meandering among the tables. "And Professor McGonagall! Hello, there!" He smiles, fondly. "Oh, the mug you gave me -- now that I think about it, still have it! And I'll have you know -- it survived a trip to the end of the Earth."

"Survived a few different endings, actually, come to think of it," he murmurs, already walking away from her.

"And Ianto Jones!" He stares at Ianto for a moment, before saying quite seriously, "I have so much to catch up on with you."

"Say, is Holmes around…" he abruptly asks no one in particular. "Had another edition for him to sign…" he murmurs, looking around the crowd. "Ah-ha! There is he is! Hello!" He waves, then stands at the front of the room, surveying the group. "Look at all of you! A few new faces, but looks like the whole gang's here! It's like... a reunion! Well, a reunion for me... Unless, you've all left, too, and somehow we've all just happened to return, right now, this very day. Say, what day is it?" He grins, positively gleeful. "Do we still have topics to discuss? I loved those chats! Is there a discussion topic right now, hmm?"

"Ah, what’s that? Stress?" he asks as someone calls out from the back. "Ah, stress!" He grins with realization, commenting, "That's what we were talking about when I left! See! I told you I'd be back in ten minutes! Same as ever!"

"So, stress..." He thinks a moment, brow furrowed. "Well, a friend of mine claims I insult other species when I'm stressed. Oh, and I'm rude. Sometimes I get more rude when I'm stressed. Things like 'My, doesn't that dress just make her look like a Krillitane.' and 'Well, how stupid could they possibly be?' just sort of fall out of my mouth. I honestly don't mean to say them and I know, I know, it's probably not the best coping mechanism, it just sorta… happens…" he trails off, smile fading, finally noticing some blank stares and a few of the customers regarding him apprehensively.

"What?"

His expression melts into one of confusion and he repeats the question, more defensively this time. "What?"

His eyes widen and he shakes his head rapidly. "Oh! Oh, no, no, no! No, don't worry! Sorry for the confusion. Just got a new face," he says with a grin. "Bit of trouble with absorbing the time vortex. Well, my friend, Rose, had some trouble with the time vortex, then I..." he breaks off, face falling. "But she's gone..." He sighs, wearily. "It's a long story."

"But I promise, it's really me. I just regenerated recently."

"Still not ginger..." he muses. "Though I did just save a red-haired bride... Well, saved her and Christmas… and the Earth..." he adds off-handedly. "But look, even though I have changed, I'm still me."

He grins again, his tone gentler now, "I'm still just 'The Doctor.'"

"And yummier than rubber bands" Abby notes, taking a long swallow of her cola.

"So... can I ask how you got out? I'd... I'd kind of like to get out of here, y'know?" She asks carefully, trying not too sound pushy.

"Well... I got her by coach. I wasn't meant to get off here. I was meant to go to Canterbury, give a seminar on the college there. But... I got stuck in the town, can't get out. Apparently most people are stuck. I do forensics, I work for the US Navy... they don't like it when people pull sickies."

*smiles*
True.
*matter-of-factly*
But less bouncy.

*runs his hands through his hair*
You know, I don't really know how I did it... I remember hopping into the TARDIS and taking off... *frowns* ...vaguely remember taking off... *looks distant for a moment, then shakes his head* Don't recall much past that, unfortunately. *frowns* And now the TARDIS isn't working again, so it's going to be awhile before a second attempt.

*listens intently, nodding, interested*
Forensics, really? *smiles* How fascinating! You're quite a long way from home though... *reconsiders* Well, maybe not in comparison to some people here. But still, quite a ways!

"Then you've never eaten at McGee's." Abby laughs, trying not to spill her drink.

"TARDIS?" She questions, head tilting slightly. "What's that? And it's broken?" Abby sighs, shoulders slumping.

The corner of her lip pulls upward slightly, but there is little feeling behind it. "Feels like a million miles. Might as well be, if I'm stuck in an alternate universe."

*eyebrows raise, interested*
Oh, where's that? Restaurant around your home or something? *grins, cheekily* A restaurant I should avoid it sounds like...?

Ah! *perfectly serious* The TARDIS! It stands for Time and Relative Dimension in Space. *grins* It's my space-ship-time-machine. *muses suddenly, mostly to himself* I should really try to get some people to help me move it... Landed a bit more... inland this time. Might be blocking traffic right now. *to Abby* But yes, unfortunately it's not functioning right now.

*distant, eyes water slightly*
Alternate universes always feel millions of miles away. *glum, quiet* Especially when you can't get to them.
*suddenly, forced cheer*
Still! Where there's a will there's a way! There has to be some way out of here... You're a woman of science -- what's your theory?

Abby laughs. "No, McGee's a... friend from work. He's lovely. Writes geeky novels and plays computer games. But can't cook."

She listens, head tipping again to one side, and tries to understand what the strange English guy is on about. "Space Ship and Time Machine? So you could go to Mars or Pluto or somewhere?" She asks, "If it worked? Do you know what's wrong?"

"Yeah..." Abby mutters, drawing shapes in spilt cola on the table top.

"My theory? On this place? I don't know. It's like there isn't anything beyond the town limits. For me. Yet Dahlia's been out of town, all over the place. You've been back and forth. It's like some sort of mass hallucination, some sort of mental thing..." She shrugs, "Physics and quantum isn't really my speciality."

*chuckles shortly*
Sounds like a nice fellow.

*nods, grinning*
Yep!
*eye twinkles*
But why would anyone want to go to Mars or Pluto -- they're so close! That'd be boring!
*leans in closer to Abby, quiet, more serious*
When my ship is working... You know how starlight travels for billions of Earth years before you humans can see it...? Well, when my ship is working I could travel to the origin of the light.
*sighs heavily*
But unfortunately, that isn't going to happen right now. Going to have to do some tests...

*raises an eyebrow*
Really? *contemplatively* You think it's a mass hallucination?

"He is." Abby says, "Although he doesn't seem to exist in this universe. All my calls keep bouncing back."

She grins, amused, and shakes her head, pigtails flying. "No-one from this time has gone to Mars or Pluto. I could go. Although I wouldn't wanna die. Maybe I should just stay here? I'm not a big fan o'flying anyway."

"If you wanna assistant..." She offers, needing something to keep her occupied till Garak's tailor shop opens up.

She shrugs, "No. Not really. It could just be me hallucinating. I can't be sure how many of these other people are real, y'know?" And then Abby smiles widely, "But who knows? I gotta do some tests o' my own."

Really? *raises an eyebrow, intrigued* Is it a cell phone you've been calling him on?

*small smile, shrugs*
Well... If it makes you feel any better, for being a space ship it really doesn't fly much. More or less disappears and reappears.

*nods, face brightening*
Yeah... Yeah, I could always use some educated assistants. Especially if you have tests to conduct and I have tests to conduct -- maybe we can see if there's any overlap, hmm?

"My cell's got no battery left. I called him from Dahlia's. And from a payphone. It didn't work. My emails never worked either." She shrugged, "I haven't been able to get in touch with anyone I work with."

"What, like on Star Trek? A transporter beam or something?" Abby asks, interest showing in her voice. "Molecular Re-distribution?"

Abby nods, eager. "Sure. I mean, it'll be interesting to see how another scientist works. I haven't worked in collaboration with anyone for ages."

*face falls a bit*
Too bad... Thought I might be able to scan it, see what's happening.

*eyes widen slightly*
*sighs*
Blimey, why is it always about Star Trek...
It's... a little bit about molecules... but more that we move through the Time Vortex.

*smiles*
Well, as it happens, I usually work with an assistant. *pauses, then adds quickly* Not that you'd be an assistant, being a scientist in your own right, just, well... *takes a breath, tries to continue in a level tone* ...I happen to be assistant-less at the moment. *nods, quickly* So, a collaborator would be great.

"I'd be happy to let you, but without power, it's useless anyway. And there isn't anywhere in Margate that has the charger I need. And nothing I order online has ever turned up."

"Sorry." She apologies as he sighs. "So... it's Molecular Re-distribution through a time vortex? This ship of yours, does it create one when and where needed? Or does it find the nearest one? I mean for that... you'd need to be manipulating quantum, wouldn't you?" She asks, leaning forwards slightly. "I mean, are these Vortexes of yours permanent things, like worm holes?"

She laughs. "No, I'd be happy to assist when you need an extra hand. As long as you don't mind helping me out too? I mean, I'll need to get to grips with your lab too." She holds out her hand for him to shake, "Partners? For a while, anyway?"

*nods*
*hushed*
Weird... *scratches his cheek, lost in thought* *muses* I wonder if there's some sort of force field keeping outside contact away...

Ahhh, no... *thinks a moment* Ah! You know how we were talking about rubber band balls... or noodles -- well, the time vortex is the ball... or the bunch of noodles. *gently* There's only one and it exists outside regular, everyday space-time, so the laws of physics here don't necessarily apply. And the TARDIS, my ship, it's heart is connected to the vortex, so that's how I travel... Does that make sense?

*grins*
Partners it is, Ms. Abby--
*breaks off*
Sorry, don't think I caught your surname...?
