WHO Hesper, Galvin and Gladys
WHEN Thursday evening, 03 January 1978
WHERE Library at first, then the corridor outside of it
WHAT Gladys is jealous and lets her brother knows about it... vehemently
RATING tbd

The hols had been good and Hesper had been very glad to see her family. Every year, by the time the Christmas break came, she was missing them fiercely and it was only worse since her brothers had completed their schooling and were no longer at Hogwarts with her. Usually, it was hard for her to come back, after two weeks with them and with their parents and the whole MacFusty clan, on her beloved Hebrides Islands, but not this year. Oh, she missed them, of course. But there was someone else she’d missed during the hols: Galvin. She’d been impatient to see him, to make sure he still wanted to be with her – though their conversation on the journals had comforted her somewhat on that front, but still… nothing was as affirmative as a good snog, right?

So here they were, comfortably hidden in a remote corner of the library, busy getting reacquainted with each other. And talking about their hols, of course. But mostly snogging.

Hesper was fuming now. "Respect goes both way, Gladys," she said through gritted teeth. Gladys was pushing it and Hesper had trouble fighting down the urge to talk back. She was shocked by how much Gladys seemed to... resent her. She wasn't sure 'resent' was the right word, but she settled on it for now, as anything stronger was probably overkill. It was an odd comfort, but comfort nonetheless, that Galvin was as angry as she was. She'd never seen him so irate before and, she had to say, it was impressive.

Galvin might have felt a twinge of remorse when he saw the shocked look on his sister's face. Except for the fact that he had already lost his temper and she'd started in again right away.

"Secondly, what, Gladys?" he asked icily, his expression turning just as stubborn and unrelenting as her own. "I didn't ask you to barge in on us, where we've been minding our own business for quite some time, thank you oh so very much!"

"Secondly, I'm not having this out in front of her." Gladys jerked her head towards Hesper. She was standing with her hands on her hips, not unlike their mum stands when she puts her foot down. All she could do was glare and feel angry. To do anything else would make her acknowledge that under it all was the hurt and rejection that came with losing one's best friend. At least, that's what it felt like. Practically since birth, it had just been Galvin and Gladys, just the two of them. Now there was Hesper. Gladys was angry at Galvin for choosing someone else over her, but she was more angry at Hesper for driving this wedge in between them.

Hesper almost lost her temper at these last words, and her parents and brothers would have been very surprised - and proud - to see her rein it in. Knowing Ross and Logan, they'd have teased her about how she'd changed in order to impress her new boyfriend... and they wouldn't have been entirely wrong. Galvin's presence - and his anger with his sister's behaviour - was a large part of why she didn't lose her head. She wanted to impress him, to look as though she was the more mature girl here.

So she turned towards him and said quietly: "I can go, if you think it might help." She didn't want Gladys to think she'd won, but she didn't want a fight in the corridors either. Or anywhere, really.

"And what if I don't care to have it out at all? There's nothing to have out, Gladys. You're being rude."

He looked at Hesper, not particularly fond of the idea, becuase he'd missed her and he wanted to spend time with her, but he obviously needed to have a good long talk with his sister. "I don't know about helping anything, but evidently she and I need to have a discussion about minding other people's business. I'll meet up with you in the common room after?" He spared her a slight smile, still too angry really to manage much more.

How dare they! Speaking about her in front of her as if she wasn't there! Honestly! This was Hesper's doing, she was sure; Galvin would never speak to her in such a manner if it weren't for her.

"Nothing to have out? Nothing--?" Gladys could not honestly believe her brother could not see her problem with Hesper. Not only was she That Bint's cousin, and thus always took her side, but she kept bringing ruddy Quidditch into their arguments, and she made Galvin fight with her.

"I'll leave you two to it, then," Hesper said, returning his slight smile with a similar one. She didn't really want to go, but it was better to if she didn't want things to get even worse. She took solace in Galvin's reluctance to see her go.

"I'll be in the common room," she promised as she left, knowing that she'd wait for him anxiously, most probably unable to do any work.

He nodded to Hesper, watching her go and waiting until she turned the corner until he spun about to face his sister. His expression was grim and angry, crossing his arms over his chest and looking down at her with a furious glare.

"Are you insane? Did that knock on your head scramble your brains? Do you need to go to the hospital wing? Because if you're going to plead insanity for your behavior, now is the time do it, before I really lose it. What the hell do you mean by embarassing me like that!?"

Galvin was never angry with Gladys - well, not like this, anyway - so she translated that to mean that Hesper was having a negative influence on him, so really, chasing Hesper away would be doing him a favor. Right?

She crossed her arms over her chest. "I could ask you the same thing. I mean, since when do we fight, Galvin? Since when does someone who isn't family come first?" She tried not to let some of the hurt that had replaced her anger show, but she was always crap at hiding her feelings from him...or anyone, really.

"We fight." Ok, well they didn't usually. At least not like this. "Not all the time, but you're being really rude. She's my girlfriend. I'm not saying you have to like her, Gladys, but stop trying to embarass me to death. It's weird enough as it is."

"She was rude first," Gladys mumbled, mostly to herself. Out loud she said, "I'm not trying to embarrass you. I'm trying to get you to see my point." Gladys was, and always had been, an emotional person; not in the sense that she cried a lot, because she didn't, but in the sense that she was always feeling something. And her feelings were usually very strong and not easily ignored, which was precisely why she was fighting with Galvin - she couldn't ignore her discomfort at her brother's choice of a girlfriend.

Galvin heaved a big sigh and ran his fingers through his hair. His sister was not a malicious person. Ok, well she could be, but not usually towards him which made this behaviror so hard to understand. "I don't understand your point, evidently. And don't try and tell me it's because of who her cousin is. Hesper is nothing like her cousin and I'm not going to hold that against her just because she's your arch enemy. So explain it to me. In small words, because I obviously am missing it."

Now that Gladys was forced to explain why she didn't like her brother dating Hesper, she was having trouble putting her feelings into words. Which was odd because Gladys nearly always had something to say.

"I..." she blushed. "Now you're just going to think I'm being silly." Galvin wasn't angry anymore, which meant that Gladys wasn't angry anymore, and besides, she was too confused to be angry.

Galvin was still plenty angry, he just didn't want to make a scene. At least not until he heard whatever insane reason his sister had come up with for disliking Hesper. "It's a step up from thinking you're insane, so you should probably have a go either way." Most of the time, he loved how off the wall his sister could be. Not, however, when it was messing up what little love life he'd managed to get by happy accident.

Okay, so maybe he wasn't as not-angry as she'd thought, but Gladys couldn't find a reason to be angry again, she was still confused. And embarrassed. Her cheeks flushed with color and she dropped her gaze, which hadn't been on Galvin to begin with, but somewhere - anywhere - else.

"I just - she doesn't like me, Galvin. She benched me for fighting with MacDougal, which that stupid bint started anyways by being so....Ugh. She opened herself up to it, is what. And...she can't leave Quid out of it. Everytime something happens, she says some sodding thing about team unity or whatever, but what she really means is be nice to sodding Caitriona MacDougal." Alright, now Gladys was finding something to get mad about again. Not that she was yelling or anything, but she had definitely found her voice and was using it passionately.

"She's the team captain, Gladys, she's supposed to be trying to keep the team together, and considering how you and MacDougal act around each other, I don't really envy her the job. And if you're bringing MacDougal into the conversation again, we're done having it." Galvin didn't understand his sister's intense dislike for Caitriona, but then, Galvin had a hard time disliking anyone that strongly. "Leave MacDougal and Quidditch out of it. This is about me liking Hesper as a girl, not a Quidditch captain or Caitriona's cousin."

"That's not what I meant." Gladys scratched an itch on her head. "She and I have been fighting since day one; bint can't take a joke. And I never heard a sodding word about it, even after we were both on the team, not from any of the other captains! Hesper's just got it out for me." Gladys emphasized the fact that she called her by her first name, which she did so that Galvin couldn't get mad at her for it.

"She doesn't have it out for you, Gladys, she's not vindictive. She just doesn't like it when people fight. Regardless of how or who started it, that's all the two of you do." He thought Hesper had a point, actually, but even angry as he was, he wasn't to the point of saying that to Gladys. "And that still doesn't explain that SCENE you just made in the library."

"If she doesn't like when people fight, maybe she should go after the person who started it, not just me! It's not fair that I always get punished twice for things and MacDougal doesn't get anything! I get points taken by Evans and benched by Hesper! Explain to me how that's fair. And I made a scene because you were snogging in a library," Gladys finshed with a false sweetness.

"Explain to me what that has to do with me dating her! It's not like I'm telling her to do any of it. I don't interfere with how she runs the team, Gladys. You don't like what Evans' does, talk to Evans. Or ignore MacDougal. She'd probably keel over and have a heart attack from shock if you did it." He rolled his eyes. "Sooooooo?" he drawled. "Was there someplace else you wanted us to be making out at? The Quidditch pitch, perhaps, during practices? Or in class? Maybe in the Great Hall at dinner...?"

Gladys literally blanched at the thought of them snogging anywhere she could see, but she stood her ground and said, "NO! Of course not. Just...a classroom, or a corner, or outside, or somewhere I won't find you!" And as for her explanation....Gladys had to think quickly for a plausable reason why this affected her so. Failing, she just gave up and told the truth.

"I'm afraid...I'm afraid it'll mean you'll pick her over me and you'll spend all your time with her and I'll never get to see you and then I'll have to find a new best friend, but all I've got is Benjy, really, and he's Davey's best friend, and I guess I've got Sirius, but he's got that Gryffindor lot, so I don't have anyone else."
