Who: Augustus Rookwood and Frederick Averett Where: The Department of Mysteries When: 2:00 p.m. Sept. 25 What: A little coercion.
It was truly amazing what could be overheard when one didn't seem to be listening. Of course, Augustus had all manner of technique, but it usually involved more spellwork or subtlety than today's nugget of information.
Doge had been a person of interest for months, and this was the opportunity they'd been waiting for. Unprotected homes gave a brilliant and rare opportunity, and Augustus had wasted no time in passing this information through the appropriate channels.
Of course, he couldn't himself be a part of the attack. This was a small group and he couldn't afford that kind of exposure risk. Still, their team needed another member and he saw a chance to have a bit of vicarious fun.
"Averett!" he called to one of the new trainees. A quiet young man from a good family; it wouldn't be difficult to believe he'd gotten caught up in a Death Eater movement after his body was discovered. Of course, Augustus would prefer it didn't come to that; but if things went poorly that night, sacrifices would need to be made.
"Yes sir?" asked the young man, seemingly eager to please a superior. That was fortunate.
"Franklin, isn't it?"
"Frederick, sir."
"Of course, Freddie," Augustus said, putting a hand on the boy's shoulder. "Would you follow me into my office? I've got a job for you."
Rookwood checked to see that no one was paying any close attention and led Averett to an unobserved location.
"Listen, Fernando, I've--"
"It's Frederick."
"I know. Listen, I've got a bit of a sticky situation on my hands and I think your talents would be just what we need."
"I'd love to help in whatever way is needed, sir. I've been waiting for an opportunity like this."
