Previous Entry  Add to memories!  Tell a Friend!  Next Entry
Who: Sirius Black, Remus Lupin.
Where & When: Hogwarts -> Hogsmeade -> and Back.
What: A rescue mission for a mouse.
Rating: A pre-emptive PG for Language? (cough sirius cough) Otherwise I don't think there's nothing special.

There was something wrong with Sirius. There just had to be. That just wasn't a proper conversation to have, best friends or not best friends. At least he'd managed to curtail it before it got out of hand, he was relieved, and he snapped the journal shut without even waiting for the ink to dry, just in case Sirius wanted to try and force in his last word about it. It'd take a few minutes to get downstairs, and hopefully by that point something shiny would have distracted him. Remus was getting off his bed and stretching, leaving the journal and the half-finished essay he'd been working on as well, before running a hand haphazardly through his hair.

There was a second there where he was worried that Sirius really was upset with him, although it'd passed quickly enough that he wasn't too concerned. Even if it niggled in the back of his mind a little. That was all. As he worked on getting on a pair of sneakers that wouldn't mind going through a bit of mud, he thought briefly about if he should grab James' cloak before going, although overall he was of the mind that it'd be all the more exciting if they might get caught, and thought that Sirius would probably agree with him. Besides, he didn't want James to be upset for them using his cloak on a mission he didn't sanction.

He'd thought to grab his jacket before he headed down the stairs, in case it was chilly (probably more so in whichever dungeon exit they'd be using than outside), and it only took a few minutes before he was coming into the Great Hall, looking around absently for his friend and heading towards the Gryffindor table. Once he'd seen him, there was an easy smile on his face and he gave a quick nod, raising his hand in a half-hearted wave.

"You ready?"

"Because you're supposed to be such a brilliant student. I hope that some day you go on one of those gameshows and the thousand pound question is going to be just that, and you'll wail about how you wish you'd studied more, but lose the money anyway. Shove over, there are some brambles I don't want to step in," he complained, reaching out to push gently on Sirius' side to try and get himself a bit of room before coming out, running his fingers through his hair before catching himself and shoving his hands into his pockets.

Luckily, Sirius had had game shows explained before. "Like I need a thousand pounds," he scoffed, although, technically, he wasn't the well-off little heir any more, was in fact living on a generous uncle's sufferance. Whatever. Sirius's lack of any true concept of money struck again!

He reached out to push Remus back, just as gently, but he stepped to the side anyway and then began shoving foliage aside to get to the lane. "You'd do better on a game show anyway," he added, glancing over his shoulder at the other boy. "It's just the sort of geeky, lame thing you were created for."

Remus had what could easily be called the opposite view of Sirius, financially. Years of medical bills and necessary renovations at home had pretty much made him a penny-pincher for life, not that he'd ever do much better than right now.

"Hey, that was uncalled for. I am not lame," he was grinning slightly anyway, and reached over to push Sirius just a little harder, rather more playfully. "Besides, I would kick your arse in pub trivia, and you'd be buying me beers all night, you know that."

"I'd buy you beers all night anyway, if it meant you'd actually drink them and we'd all get to see Sloshed Remus," Sirius pointed out, raising his brows pointedly before he shoved back, hard enough, he hoped, to almost-push-Remus-over-but-not-quite. "And you are lame indeed, Moony. Hate to break it to you, but you wear sweatervests and you have actually read Hogwarts: A History. Those are definitionally lame traits, my friend."

"I don't get sloshed, I've told you that. Maybe, some day, in the far future, I will allow you to try and pump me feel of alcohol, and I will prove how not-sloshed I get, eh?" He stumbled to the side just slightly at the shove, and shifted to turn and nearly run back at Sirius to give him his own body-check to the side. It was late enough that there weren't very many people about, he didn't mind getting into a playful tussle. Wasn't too long after a full moon, sure, but it wasn't bad, either. "Definitionally isn't a word, and pains me to repeat."

Sirius pouted, as displeased as always at Remus's assertion that he didn't get drunk. Not that he believed a word of it- metabolism, schmetabolism, everybody got sloshed with enough alcohol. "Everybody gets sloshed," he protested aloud, more than a trace of sulk in his voice. Fortunately, he was distracted by the body-check, which took him enough by surprise that he was knocked off his feet, grabbing at Remus as he went down in an attempt to save his dignity by bringing the other boy down with him. "Is so, I just said it, didn't I? How could I say it if it wasn't a word?"

Remus didn't mind being pulled down with him-- in his experience, it was easier to just do what Sirius wanted than really fight him. Remus would end up doing what Sirius wanted in the end, so he might as well make it as easy on himself as possible. "Not everybody-- not people with furry little problems, least of all," he argued, shifting to push himself up a little more. One hand moved to ruffle Sirius' hair before starting to stand again. "Just because you say something, doesn't mean it's a word. It's not an English word. I don't see it in Webster's, now do I?"

Sirius blinked as his hair was ruffled, then shrugged; he was a lot more zen about his hair than James ever would be. "You would," he protested as he got to his feet. "If you drank enough, you would. Maybe you need gallons, whatever, but you'd still eventually get sloshed. I don't know, do you? I don't have a copy of Webster on me. Not like I bet you do, you enormous prat."

"What, do you have some miracle access to gallons of whiskey? Not that I'd drink it-- it all tastes positively disgusting. I heard that screwdrivers, are good, though, they just taste like orange juice. I could drink orange juice, I suppose," he mused aloud as he started down the street once again, swinging his arms absently. "I don't have one on me, but I know most of it. It's fairly basic, you magnificent twat."

"Vodka. Right. Buying you several handles of vodka and an equal number of gallons of orange juice. Got it," Sirius said with a grin. "We'll make a night of it. Have to be a different one from the movie night, I suppose. No Lily, she won't let us do things to blackmail you with later once we've actually got you drunk," he mused.

They were nearing the Owlery now, but Sirius stopped dead to stare at Remus. "You know most of the dictionary?" he asked, then shook his head violently, fringe falling into his eyes. "How have we let you live lo these many years?"

"Oh, well now that I know you'll blackmail me, I demand to have Lily there. She'll at least keep me grounded, I'd hope. At least it won't be during the schoolyear, at least. And I don't think a screwdriver is 50-50, is it?" He asked absently. Sirius would know better than him, in any case, and he had his hands tucked into his pockets.

"Oh. Well, I mean, it's not like I read it or anything, but, well. I look things up in it, you know, a fair amount, so I may need to browse a few pages here and there to know what's what..." He trailed off, and knocked his elbow against the other boy. "Go get the door open, won't you?"

"It is if I want it to be," Sirius pointed out, grinning a bit wickedly. "If you insist on Lily coming, then it'll have to be a party rather than just a Lad's Night, and there will be tons of people there to see your first moment of true drunkeness." He arched a brow, triumphant, because surely Remus would want to just keep it among them, especially in case anyone got curious as to why it took him so much to get drunk.

He bumped his own arm into Remus, then trotted off to the door as instructed, obedient as a dog when he wasn't paying attention. It took a few murmured unlocking spells, not to mention a preemptive charm to prevent the store alarm from going off, but then the door swung open under his fingers, and he swept an exaggerated bow and gestured for Remus to go in first.

Remus rolled his eyes at that and gave him a slightly dirty look before crossing his arms. "Well. Well, fine then. I suppose it'll have to be just among the Marauders." Maybe if James was there, he'd.... no. James would point and laugh. No use trying to escape.

"Why thank you, my good Mssr Black," he murmured, tipping an invisible hat for him as he grinned and headed inside. There was a distinct smell of Bird, and he came inside a little further. There was quite a bit of hooting going on at someone coming in, and he gestured for him to close the door quickly. "Where do you think they'd keep the mice?"

Sirius let out a triumphant whoop as he straightened and followed Remus inside, shutting the door quietly behind them. "In dire captivity," he suggested, glaring around at the owls occupying the shop, dirty eater of helpless mice that they were. Or, well, where he supposed the owls to be, anyway, from the hooting; it was too dark in here to see them, not until his eyes adjusted, at any rate. With that in mind, he whipped out his wand and lit it, holding it high so they could see further in the faint glow it emitted. "Maybe a bin? A horrible overcrowded cage? A dungeon? See anything like that?"

"Oh, stuff it. I might not go through with it. We'll see. Well, I mean, I'll do it, but I certainly won't get drunk, I'm sure." He added confidently, looking around and reaching up to push Sirius' arm down and too the side a little more. "Looks like there are some cages..." He mumbled. They were covered by a tarp, and he had to pull it off to look at them. There certainly were a lot of mice, but they all seemed quite happy and well-cared for. "All right, all right. Go pick one."

"Unless you do," Sirius muttered, letting his arm be guided. He let out another, albeit softer, whoop as they spotted the cages and the mice were revealed; shoving his wand at Remus, he knelt down to look at the inmates more closely.

"After we take ours, can we let the rest go?" he asked hopefully after a minute; the thought of the owls eating the poor little things, gulping them down swollen gullets, sent shivers down his spine. Not that he would have admitted it to anyone else but Remus or James; he had a reputation to uphold, and soft-heartedness didn't figure into it.

"Only I won't," he added on. When he took the wand, it spluttered slightly and the light was definitely dimmer afterwards. He shook his head, though, although reached over to rub a hand against Sirius' back absently.

"No. They're feeder mice, Sirius. They'll just be eaten by the wild owls, or starve, and they'll have to order more. We'll just take ours, he'll be safe." He understood Sirius' point, but he was rather more open to the whole concept of that being the way nature works, too.

Sirius was too distracted to argue the point any more. He leaned absently back into the hand against his back, still watching the little animals in the cages squeak in the distress of suddenly being disturbed.

"Hear that? It's his fault we're not taking you all," he murmured to the mice, reaching his fingers into the closest cage and only flinching a little as the nearest mice tumbled over each other or tried to bite at him. The sudden tumble of the nervous animals to get away from his hand revealed the few at the bottom of the mouse-pile that were still curled up, not alerted yet. "How about him?" he asked, pointing to a small, completely white mouse which appeared to be eyeing his finger sleepily but not running for it. "He look like a Remus Jr to you?"

"It's not my fault. They wouldn't know how to look for food or hide from predators or anything. This is really the best there is for them," he murmured, giving Sirius' shoulder a one-handed squeeze as he crowded in a little more to get a better look at what the owlery had to offer them in terms of pets.

"Do I really come across that sleepy?" He teased lightly, but nodded. "See if he bites you. It's the reaction that's the most important bit. I won't be having my name on anything that's a bit of a bastard."

"No, but you give me that look all the time," Sirius teased right back, glancing over at Remus briefly and giving him a small, fond smile before turning back to the cage. At the prompting, he lowered his finger to the mouse in question and was met with a questing, curious nose but, thankfully, no teeth. Even when he stroked the mouse's head, it squeaked and stood up, backing away warily, but it didn't attack.

"Satisfied?" he asked, glancing at Remus- the human Remus- again.

"What, wary suspicion? Well. I suppose, if you were trying to poke me in the face, I would. I'm sure I have." He pursed his lips just lightly and leaned over Sirius' shoulder to get a closer look before smiling just slightly and giving a nod.

"Why not. He's a little shy-- you'll have to be gentle with him, but he seems nice enough.

"A little shy?" Sirius echoed, shooting a teasing grin at Remus. "Have to be careful with him? He does sound like you. Out you come, little fellow," he added, turning back to scoop the still-squeaking mouse into his palm, bringing it up for Remus to study. "There, look at him. He's quite sweet, innee? This was a good idea of yours, Moony."

"Oh, stuff it... You don't have to be careful with me," he argued, and moved to the side as Sirius pulled him out. He reached forward to give him a light scritch on the head with just a finger, and the mouse seemed willing to submit himself to the affection. "He is rather adorable," he admitted finally, before giving a small smile at the compliment. "Aren't all my ideas, though?"

"I have to be careful with your books," Sirius retorted. "Almost the same thing. He's not rather adorable, he's completely adorable." He reached down to shut the cage on the other occupants with a small sigh. "May your next life be nicer, little blokes. C'mon, let's go, yeah? Your ideas are sometimes good. Sometimes, however, they're about studying."

"Studying is important..." He complained absently, but wasn't about to push it right now. Not while Sirius had an ickle life in his hands. "We might as well, shouldn't we? Come on, then. Let's get out and lock up behind us. I don't think anyone'll even notice that we've been here," he admitted, looking around the shop idly as he pulled the blanket back up over the cage.
