The good thing about being a woman was that when it was over, it was over. She'd yet to have to deal with a sobbing mess holding onto her legs begging her to stay. They had a nice time, and when the magic was gone, she was too. It was safe that way. And truth be told, it made her genuinely happy. No strings, no commitments, no meeting crazy family members. She'd met some real characters in the past few years, and it was nice. She could count the drawbacks on one hand, but she rarely wasted her time.
The biggest being that once it was over she didn't do the friend thing. Which made it tough to connect to people and maintain a friendship. She was always moving. She rarely stayed in the same state. Tess had lived in six, not to mention her time overseas. And generally she moved to a different coast every time. The north, however, hadn't taken to her, she didn't like the cold. Getting around that had required some creative thinking two years earlier. And now there she was, spending half her day adjusting to a new hospital, and half her night sitting on the cold floor of a new, dusty place digging stuff out of boxes.
This just called for a night out.
It was a week day so she didn't feel the need to dress up. She had no real motive for going out other than to get buzzed. She'd bee in Louisiana less than a week, and she needed to get out and meet people and see stuff. Bars were great for that. She'd changed into a plain t-shirt, and dark jeans, and wore her hair in a long ponytail. Plopping down at the bar she avoided the wandering eyes of some locals and a table of bottle blondes that were scrutinizing her for dressing down. She bit back the urge to tell them when they worked her hours, they could give her advice on what not to wear.
No, tonight she didn't feel like fighting. So she ordered a Bud Light draft and a basket of fries and pretended she didn't care about the carbs, quietly observing small details about everyone in the room. Sitting up after slouching, she accidentally felt her elbow make very light contact with someone passing by behind her.
"Jesus, I uh, sorry." She winced. "Hope I didn't getcha good there." She didn't really look up, not out of disrespect, but nervousness. She wasn't as natural with meeting people as her brother was.
