The Detective is the real person, the one who--while forever scarred by trauma--continues to help people because he wants to help, and deep down, he's a good person.
To many writers use him as a quick antagonistic cypher their characters need to overcome. Instead of someone who--while he may have choice words on how someone is operating--would be more likely to help than chew someone out.
