Originally, it was something of a mutual decision for Dick not to be Batman's partner anymore, and that eventually led to him choosing Nightwing. Sure, Dick instigated it, being a little tired of being the post-and in the partnership, and figuring he was going to college now, he should be his own man. And Bruce never fired anyone.

But no, now Bruce has to be a royal fuck to everyone. Mutter mutter mumble mutter grumble.
