Privilege is something you are born with. You can't gain it or lose it, you can't get rid of it just because you don't want it and you can't gain privilege through force or will or narcissism. Whether you have white privilege, male privilege, or whatever, is determined by your race, your sex, etc.. It is not determined by your actions. If you are male, for example, YOU HAVE MALE PRIVILEGE. That doesn't mean you are personally sexist or misogynist -- it simply means you are male, and our society gives you certain privileges because of that. (From the comm resources page, here is a list of examples.) Certain actions may be easier for certain people because of their privilege, but the actions themselves don't SHOW the privilege, nor is the EXISTENCE of that privilege something you can legitimately criticize an individual for. Whether they have it or not is out of their control. The only legitimate criticism would be "you don't seem to be aware of your privilege and are saying offensive things as a result".
Since *any* poster could have made this comic without fighting an uphill battle to do it, regardless of their social status, I really don't see how it can be an illustration of the poster's privilege or their unawareness of it. Entitlement... maybe. If you'd used that word before instead of privilege I probably would have just let it go.
Can you point me to the old thread(s) in which another poster was banned for making a Nazi comparison? I only recently started reading scans_daily again since the move from LJ, and I'd like to read that incident before commenting on it.
