Eisner's "PS Monthly", by way of Eddie Campbell
At his blog FATE OF THE ARTIST, the great Eddie Campbell has posted a sampling of some scans from the Army, ahem, maintenance publication PS MONTHLY, which was Will Eisner's creation, and which had, as part of its purpose, training re: VD. All I can say is that Ellen, who the girl in the pages resembles, was certainly a bit of a hussy in wartime. (The entire archive from which he got it is here)

Sexual harrassment: the graphic novel!, aka Oliver Queen's brief time in the armed forces.

I would have thought Miss Lace would be better for a VD prevention comic, myself.

You know, I read Wally Wood's Gang Bang comics and was wondering if that one chick was a deliberate parody of anything. Now I know.

A comic book about hardware maintenance staring a blond bombshell.

Can I put this on my pull list?

It's a funny thought, but this probably prevented a number of injuries and deaths. Servicemen paid more attention because the art was sexy and funny.. they reread the pamphlets, remembered the information better.. and during a battle or while traveling through hazardous terrain, more than a few American soldiers were spared being killed because of equipment failure. And the moral is, comics save lives.

Gah. I think they still have some of those stupid magazines around. And thank YOU for forcing me to remember that PMCS means 'preventive maintenance checks and services'.

Huh. So which one is the Very Special VD prevention issue? And who's Ellen?
