Stuff like this makes me regret the fact that Vertigo was shunted off into its own universe. I suppose that it allowed for two very different styles of storytelling to emerge, but the separation weakened both. DC was weakened by the loss of experimentation, and Vertigo by the loss of established characters to play with (and play off of).
The greater loss was DC's, but I don't discount Vertigo's.
