Yeah, I don't get why anybody thinks this is redeeming. There's been a huge amount of point-missing in this argument from the beginning. It has very little to do with being upset that the rape happened, and everything to do with being upset with how the concept is being treated by the narrative. Taking out the fact of the rape does not change the way the story treated the idea, and therefore does nothing whatsoever to alleviate or even address the actual problem of "lol rape is screwball comedy fodder" that has people pissed off here.
