The big difference is that Batman doesn't try to push anyone else into following his principle. That's already a compromise. It's the rule that he follows, it's something that he's based his sanity upon, and seeing him shout that 'he's going to make an exception' is imo even more disturbing than simply seeing him grab a gun.
