Re: Mod note
Actually this post exemplifies why I tend to get riled a bit when people seem to want to make a big campaign out of hating BND. As to me it's a case of:- "What?!? ..People are upset over the end of a FICTITIOUS marriage?..When there are plenty of real world horrors that are largely downplayed or ignored by most folks?" So I can definitely understand why people are upset over this. As it is something in the real world that shouldn't ever be treated lightly.
Having said that, I have to believe that this was done through stupidity and ignorance, because I really can't believe someone would know the connatations to this, and still go ahead and make a bad taste joke out of it! That's just asking for trouble. It might well be the case that this guy really sucks at his real world history, which I think is more damning of the US educational sytem than anything else.
It does make me think though:-That in first year of University I did have a history class that explored the causes, events, and ramifications of WWII. So although I was certainly aware of it from that, I honestly can't remember now if it was sufficiently explored in my school history curriculum for me to have immediately linked the words with it back then. So maybe this guy doesn't have a college education and has just somehow inexplicitly not picked up on this. Because if there's anything I've learned over the years, it's that there are unfortunately some folks out there whose ignorance of history is quite shocking. (Heck even current international events seem to slip past folks who spend too much of their time on their games consoles! )
And certainly I've seen a lot of American films/tv shows, where people have used these words in the plot for something else entirely. But I don't think I've ever seen them used carelessly for comedic effect, which seems to be the intent here. Very, very careless...
