It is ignorant. The stunning thing is that it is not just ignorant, but that it is ignorant on multiple levels. A: The writer called something "The Final Solution." Okay, not great, not bad.
B: The writer called two veterans of WWII, "The Final Solution." Not bad either, but a bell rings.
C: The writer called two jews "The Final Solution." At this point, much like "yellow" and "bulldozer" the concepts should probably circle around in your mind and impact with a result not entirely like what happened to Arthur Dent.
Now, here's the key part.
D: The EDITOR missed it. The editor's job is to check things for, among other things, cultural stupidity. A sanity check, if you would.
E: The incredibly experienced editor missed it. If it was some new guy, it wouldn't be so bad.
Now, this is something more on the level of a facepalm, but it's also a little alert to 'hey, you guys are not only being tonedeaf, but stupidly so. Might want to recheck your preconceptions here... maybe something else you let slip is coming off tonedeaf. Say, your treatment of women.'
Ya gots? It's not so much the error, as the fact that it passed multiple people, still went through, and nobody saw a problem with it.
