I'm curious as to whether splitting Jean and Scott up was actually something Claremont intended to do back in 91 or not. I suspect it's more a reaction to this, but given that he was never a fan of bringing her back anyway, it's entirely possible he wanted to break them up, but wasn't allowed to by editorial at the the time, but now he has the freedom to do so in Forever. Probably a mix of multiple factors, either way, and probably wouldn't have happened in 616 canon. But I suspect that if Claremont had been writing the book they wouldn't have married either.
