I would have liked Ted because it would have been a relationship with some traction. He's a fellow superhero who worked closely with her, had a long courtship, and was a significant part of the series that defined her whole modern character; they met as equals, at a time in her life when that made sense (Babs being that hesitant and wrong-footed and not knowing everything there is to know about the guy already shouldn't really happen nowadays); they're on the same level in a meta sense in terms of franchise relevance (his status as a symbol of the BwaHaHa League is comparable to her status as a symbol of the first generation Batkids). In short, he's got the credibility with the fanbase to actually challenge Dick. A writer could believably sell him as someone Babs might end up with. Someone like Gage, on the other hand, is about as plausible a prospect as Vesper Fairchild was for Bruce.
