it's always struck me as odd that so much of what's good for society seems at odds with what's good for individuals
That rather depends on how you define what's good for society, doesn't it? It's fascinating how what's good for society changes whether you're listening to the owner of a million-making firm or to the workers of a factory that's getting closed because it would cost less for the product to be made in China or to the leader of a racist party or to a civil servant. And which individuals each of these would consider worth thinking about.
