I was thinking about current culture, and these examples are from way in the past. The trend today is to blame the man for not keeping the woman satisfied (he's usually shown working too long hours to pay for everything and not being romantic enough) and for her to shown freeing herself through infidelity. A movie about a man who feels stifled by an unhappy marriage and takes off to find himself would not only not be a hit, it would get theatres picketed.
And of course, articles and advertising aimed at men have always given them much the exact same message as this. Show your wife you care, bring her home something nice. Take time to listen to her, try to spend some time together. Every Valentine's Day, radio and TV and print ads urge men to spend lots and lots of money on their wives and girlfriends to show they care. There's a strong message that men are judged by how much they have to spend. ("He went to Jarrod's!"AW, does he have a brother?") Feh. Society pushes everyone into boxes.
