They're still fighting to save the future; that doesn't necessarily require that things constantly get better (among other things, that would make the comics much harder to write; they can never fully win, in the same way Ben Grimm can never stop being the Thing). I certainly don't mind more successes than has been the case at certain points, of course. Anyway, Morrison's supposed working for a better future kicked off with genocide to the tune of 16 million people (and the idea that a large population explosion somehow made the past dynamic irrelevant never made a lick of sense; if anything, there being so many more mutants made the question of how mutants were going to interact with humanity more relevant, not less).
