In a field that tends to favor style over substance, ass-shots over honest-to-god illustrative narrative, steroid muscles and silicone breasts over the human anatomy, and talking heads/TV crime drama set pieces, Quitely is more than a breath of fresh air, he's the goddamn hurricane.
I can name perhaps a few comic artists out there who seriously look to use the comic book page for all its worth. Quitely stands out there. His sense of narrative is superb, his fight scenes are glorious, and he never wastes a panel. The body and facial language is evocative and leads into the next panel, the next page.
I know, I know, personal tastes and all that. People like Skottie Young and Humberto Ramos, which I cannot fathom (though I respect Young a great deal - he's shown his stylistic breadth and courage), and even more mysterious, Benes. But even with solid artists that I see here on s_d, its all very...bombastic, or the exact opposite, all mood. They are very capable, surely more than I, but Quitely is one of a very few that heightens comic-book art to a new level.
