I just love that. I love any of the 1940 holdovers in Dick's origins (even his name)--and again, it's totally something that appeals to Dick being a little boy way smaller than the oath. Reading this now makes me think of that conversation Dick just had in Blackest Night where he said how he wasn't afraid of death, pointing out that working on a trapeze without a net was just as dangerous, so this was just the same thing with a new costume and a new family. That says a lot in there, I'm not sure how to unpack all of it.
