He made it his own and evolved a great style from it. But at the time, he was relying on Munoz then as Bill S. and Dave Sim once had Adams and Smith.
I wouldn't call it plagiarism as some did. I'd call it just what it was: a crutch. But crutches can be very useful for a limited time.
I'm surely not attacking him; my favorite stuff of his is exactly in that period--AMBUSH BUG, for instance.
