You will not find many Asimov fans who have much of anything positive to say about any movie that's been made of any of his work.
Though telling me he's like Tolkien isn't necessarily going to win me over.
Just in terms of influence. Without Asimov, there would be no Data or Majel-Barett-ship's-computer. No Red Tornado or Metal Men or Vision. No Hal 9000, or HARDAC if you remember those B:tAS episodes (that one's actually very nearly a direct reference). No Terminator. It wouldn't quite be accurate to say he singlehandedly invented robots and the very concept of AI, but only in the same way that it wouldn't quite be accurate to say Mary Shelley singlehandedly invented the mad scientist. Before him, there was none. After him, they were everywhere, and they all used his words and his concepts, even if it was just to subvert them or combine them with other things. Not knowing Asimov as a scifi fan is like not knowing Superman as a comic book fan. Nothing says you have to, and certainly he's not everybody's cup of tea, but that's a lot of history and context to miss if you're into that kind of thing.
