It's probably because, to your average plebe, that's basically what theatre is. That, Shakespeare, and Chekov, with the occasional Broadway musical. To the blue-collar non-theatre-goer, theatre seems awfully boring and hoity-toity. (Hell, I'm not blue-collar, took theatre classes in college, have acted in a few plays myself, and it STILL occasionally seems that way to me.)
