Actually you said they were justified in hating mutants. "The thing about prejudice is that it's defined by hating a group for no good reason, and "being able to kill you by thinking about it" seems like a pretty damned good reason."
Most mutants can control their powers, and the victims of thugs that go out mutant-bashing will usually be the ones who can control them.
As for not trusting them not to lose their temper and start killing people, go back to my earlier example. Anyone with a gun could just as easily lose their temper and start killing people. that's not hypothetical. It really happens. Are you afraid of all people? Even all people who own guns?
