You know, there's probably a reason Peter doesn't have that many friends

Peter comes upon Harry while he's wigging out on drugs,

Photobucket

Harry then falls down the stairs, breaks his neck and dies, all because Peter couldn't spare him the time to make sure he didn't hurt himself...

OK that didn't happen, but it could've.

Ah, Harry. The Spider-Man buttmonkey.

Someone ought to scan the time Falcon beat up Harry because he thought Harry was Spider-Man.

Makes Ollie look kind of compassionate, doesn't he?

I have no experience taking LSD, but would somebody be still tripping on acid he dropped the day before? I thought it lasted, like, 5 hours or so.

He's using Rich People's LSD - lasts longer and causes much much more disturbing hallucinations. Increased musical ability optional.

So acid is like Mountain Dew, then?

In all fairness though, he did hear someone scream for help. Peter's not in a good mood, but between either saving someone, or comforting someone because of stupid actions they freely undertook, I think saving someone is the far more moral choice.

That it is, I didn't see that.

Well, Harry was being a big pussy and drama queen. He's not worth the effort :P

Yeah, Harry has some pretty...'extreme' reactions to LSD, but they are genuine reactions all the same. Not to mention this is the guy who grew up with Norman Osborn as a father, he kinda started behind the eight ball.

Oh no, I would make that choice too, you're right. It's more just the whole attitude that's over-the-top even before he hears the call to help.

Though I should say that it's also kind of refreshing change from the way drug addiction storylines seem to often go on network TV. There you seem to always get situations where all their friends are only worried about them destroying themselves and planning interventions and all that no matter what the other person does. Where as in real life drug addicts can actually just be very annoying, and people often need to just ot deal with them to avoid getting sucked into the morass.

Also, I didn't realize Peter's rage was coming from so many other things, as somebody explained below. That explains a lot of his attitude that seemed a little much.

Again, it was Harry himself who was calling for help.

For me, what makes Peter seem dickish here is his attitude about the whole thing. "Harry brought this upon himself, and there isn't much I can do to help him since he won't get off the drugs. Meanwhile, Gwen Stacy's murderer is still on the loose. I can't stop Harry from doing LSD but I CAN stop the Green Goblin from killing again" would sound reasonable.

But he phrased it more like, "Should I stay here to help my whiny little bitch of a friend, or should I go kill the guy who wronged me? Hmm... killing it is! Ha, ha! As if mere friendship could stop me from getting my revenge on!"

But, then again, Peter was going through a terrible time just then so I guess one can excuse him for being so overwrought about it all.

Thanks for that explanation about the calling for help.

But yeah, ITA. That's what I originally meant about him making Ollie look compassionate. But learning that Gwen recently died explains to me at least why he's being so contemptuous of Harry. It seems like it's kind of a kicking the dog moment rather than the way Peter automatically reacts to drug use.

That's true. But at the same time, it's also one of the moments Peter failed, utterly, to be a friend. Did he ever feel badly about this?

Thing is, he does stuff like this all the time. The use of such incidents is his guilt later.

Armchair shrink: Peter's guilt is how he avoids admitting he did wrong and then working to change! He thinks his emo is punishment enough!

Let's see:

Harry's hopped up on LSD again.
Harry's alienated just about every friend he's got, including his girlfriend, Mary Jane Watson.
Harry has refused to get off drugs, but instead keeps hitting harder and harder stuff.
Harry's dad MURDERS Peter's girlfriend.

Yeah, I'm not seeing Spider-dickery, here.

Harry's actually on pretty good terms with all the other characters at this point, which is why his relapse was so surprising.

And 'refused' to get off drugs? It's an addiction, it's not like refusing to change your stinky socks. I don't think Peter's acting horribly here, but Harry isn't entirely unsympathetic.

I'm just echoing Peter's angry though process there. Harry is an addict (at least, until he's not...you know, comics...) and certainly out of control, again. Relapses are like that in real life, too. And you have to put this in perspective: this was in the 1970s...addiction wasn't viewed quite the same way, then.

Hell, Peter's even slightly berating himself and recognizing his own selfishness....but Harry's REALLY testing his loyalties, here. Bad enough his father is Peter's greatest enemy; bad enough that his father JUST KILLED THE WOMAN HE LOVES; but on top of everything else, when Peter needs him most, he's falling apart, from Peter's perspective. He's filled with Anger, Self-Loathing and Despair...and Harry's a convenient target.

Peter's shining moment? Not by a long shot...but not exactly dickery in my mind.
