I generally agree, but I feel we need to expect better. If there are no expectations of decency then we are more inclined to turn a blind eye to atrocities, accepting that war is Hell and anything goes. There needs to be a standard in place. I accept that it can seem arbitrary on the battlefield, but I think the majority of us respond in horror to obvious atrocities like the Mỹ Lai massacre, even when being aware of the realities of conflict, because there's a distinct sense of 'this is wrong' or 'this is too much.' I'm not sure I'd consider it naive to have that reaction, just like I don't think Superman's reaction is naive.
