Awkward moment
A very brief conversation on the virtues of secret identities and the questionable...uh...'modesty' of skintight superhero costumes.

Photobucket

ETA: Kyle putting out the fire has been added (and the pages put in their proper order) so that he looks less like an irresponsible twit willing to let the building burn.

Context: Jade and Kyle (still dating at the time) deal with a fire, prompting a firefighter to personally express his gratitude. That simple.

Photobucket
He not only takes the time to save the cat, but gives it its own little suit too. Kyle's constructs were always fun.

So tight you can see the mole on his back? Huh....

"Hey, wanna put out that fire?"

"Pff, no lives are in danger, why bother?"

Reckless disregard for property: It's not just for fighting!

I don't think firefighters worry about property. You always hear stories about them smashing thru car windows of idiots who park in front of fire hydrants and concentrating on channeling forest fires rather than saving individual homes that're gonna get toasted but are already evacuated.

Actually, I think he went on to put the fire out by covering the building and cutting off the air supply to the fire, so it went out with minimal property damage.

Yeah, that's exactly what he did. He can be flighty, but he isn't flighty enough to just leave it burning ('What? Got to leave something for the firefighters so that they can feel useful!')!

That's more than reckless disregard for property. If there's a fire, it's dangerous.

Men actually are under greater social pressure not to wear revealing or skintight clothing than women (especially beneath the waist). The whole "shorts that reach to ankles" and the generally baggy look is a sign. Women's bodies are generally regarded as more attractive and acceptable than men's (again, especially below the waist).

On the other hand, women's bodies are going to be sexualized. A man who's not wearing a shirt, or a man who's wearing shorts that reach the knees, for instance, is going to attract a lot less attention than a woman in the same situation. It depends on the context, sure, but one of the reason why tight or low-cut clothes are a-okay for women to wear in Western society today is because women being beautiful directly ties in with women's bodies being sexualized.

This is a very nice exchange on the subject matter. I think it makes sense for folks like Captain America to have the amazing physic, but not people like Green Lantern. I think it would be funny if Jade or someone ever caught him using the ring to augment his anatomy...

I had to raise an eyebrow when, earlier in the book's run, Kyle claimed that he didn't work out when Donna teased him for not being able to match her pace while jogging. Someone in the letter column pointed out that it doesn't make any sense for someone who leads a relatively lazy lifestyle to have Kyle's physique. I don't remember if there was a response printed to that letter.

Yeah I would agree. Like I said many of the "fighter" heroes ,CAP, Batman,Daredevil would have th killer bod. Not GreenLantern Reed Richard used to be drawn that was too in the 70's-80's alot.

I can see John and Hal staying in shape due to their backgrounds and pride (though they probably still shouldn't have Batman's physique, since they, you know, actually have lives and can't dedicate all their time to training), not so sure about Guy, and Kyle would most likely be considerably...'softer.'

I wish comic book artists would be more mindful of that sort of thing. Spider-man, Captain America and Wolverine shouldn't all have the same build.

Definitely, both men and women in the comics need a wide variety of body types. It's one reason I've lost interest in modern comics.

The ring works you out! No sense in a GL with the right mind not having the right body. If I remember (might have been in Guy's comic), Guy actually used the ring to beef himself up a freaking ton.

What she's got on here isn't actually revealing at all, is it? It looks like a fairly standard neck-to-ankle super-jumpsuit thing to me. Tight, probably, yes, but hardly any of her actual skin is showing, certainly not any more than Kyle's. I don't know how you could reveal less, except maybe by wearing a bag over your head.

I always liked Jade's first costume, the sleeveless catsuit thing with the thigh-high boots. It managed to get "deliberately sexy" in the same room as "I have warm legs and my breasts stay in place and I don't have to be religiously obsessive about keeping up with the bikini wax."

I actually took one look at it and thought she had a cut-out near the breasts. Turns out it's just her superhero emblem. The dangers of having green skin...
