CCI: JSA
I've been a long time lurker of SD for quite some time now (pre-lj eviction included), and the one thing I remember was concern regarding Willingham's future handling of Obsidian.

In fact, one question in particular was brought up.

Asked about whether the Obsidian character would remain gay in the JSA series, Willingham said, "I'm almost 97% certain that there won't be a scene in an upcoming issue of JSA where Obsidian goes, 'I'm cured! I'm no longer gay! I like women!'" before joking that the other 3% had to remain iffy so he would not lose his membership as a Republican.

Mind you, I never thought he would; however, it does make me feel a little bit better about his upcoming run since he plans to actually use Obsidian for something other than wallpaper.

Source.

In other news, they're splitting JSA into two teams/books with the new one called JSA All Stars. Here's the first cover for legality/those who are interested:

... I'm trying to find the dirty joke involving the two of them and why Maxine's monkey is suddenly so tiny. I know it's there, but it's just not coming to me.

All that comes to mind is "shunting mass from her monkey to her breasts."

*dream dissolve*

Atom Smasher: Hey, Court, what's up?

Stargirl: Hey Al, you'd do anything for me, right?

Atom Smasher: You know I would, Courtney.

Courtney: Remember when you told me you just discovered to to use your mass-altering powers on objects besides yourself? Well...

I think the more operative question is when did Judomaster's chest outgrow Powergirl's?

Yeah, that is rather odd. However, she isn't vansihing, which makes me oh so pleased.
Also, has her monkey shrunk? Ok, that just sounds odd.

The art..It's art when you first look at it appears to be alright, but when you look at it a little longer...Ugh. Why is Stargirl's lips on one side of her face like that? Why does Wildcat look like he just woke up and is in the middle of a horrible hangover?

And while we're talking about Stargirl's lips, she's never struck me as a girl to go for the dark red lipstick. Maxine, sure, she probably loves playing with makeup. Power Girl, why not, she likes doing dramatic fashion things, and maybe she's hoping to distract people from how weirdly her face is shaped. But Stargirl? And... isn't that Judomaster? Is the colorist maybe unaware that women's lips aren't naturally that color?

There's two new characters joining: King Chimera and the All-American Kid.

Given the lack of an American Flag, I'm going to go with King Chimera.

Phew! Well then, colour me intruiged. I do like the ol' Legacy switcheroo. Maybe it's Brainwave Jr., the cover art does suggest a telepath.
Also, I wonder why he's cosplaying as Sasha Bordeaux there.

I'm still leery of what he might do to Obsidian, though with Sturges co-writing I don't suppose he'll go completely overboard...

And I suppose they have to split the book into two just to have space for all the characters...

But wow, I do not like that cover. It'd be one thing if any of the characters had unique expression, or even *facial* features, but right now it's terribly boring. And what's worse, this seems to be the half that most of the female characters have been shunted to -- so are they going to stuck with dull art and lifeless portrayals? I hope not. I liked that there were so many women in the JSA line-up.

They're only co-writing the opening arc. After that, Sturges gets JSA All-Stars (the members on that cover) and Willingham gets JSA (the members not on that cover). Obsidian goes in the latter category, it looks like.

Really? I'll give each new book three issues. But I'm not hopeful, since both FABLES and JACK OF FABLES managed to turn me off enough to drop them, in spite of solid plots and some interesting villain concepts.

Yeah, my concern has never been that he'll make Todd not gay. Of the many things that happen to gay characters that need to not happen to Todd, that is not even on the radar.

As for the gender ratio... Liberty Belle is the only female character who's actually had a worthwhile story or any kind of meaningful development (even Peej, who's gotten some facetime, has just been rehashing old angst), so even if the women in Sturges' book end up completely flat, we can at least feel satisfied that that's any real change for the franchise.

I'm worried about them fridging Damon, to start with. To say I don't trust Willingham is just the start. The part that bugs me is that he'll have some brilliant concept, and then the execution will include something that is completely infuriating.

I was hoping that they'd trim some of the JSA cast (let some of them 'graduate', please!) and we'd get back to the teaching theme with a cast that is closer to half female, since most of the female characters were the younger ones...

Splitting JSA into two books is a good idea. Of course, putting almost all of the boring new members into one of them is not.
Still, I'm curious to see whether the brand name can sustain a spin-off already.

In May, JSA was at about 56,000; however, it suffered a 30% drop off but that could just be the Johns effect as his last issue was in April.

It's DC's hard-on for Kingdom Come.

I still can't think of a reason why he's getting a solo in the first place when there's characters far more deserving.

Hard to say how I feel about this . I do thing the current title is over loaded. I have no idea why the powers that be decided to move away from the core and bring in the B&C list talent. If dividing the team allows for the trditional heroes of the JSA to shine (This means Hawkman too) then it could work.
