Death: The High Cost Of Living
Death: The High Cost Of Living is a three-issue miniseries published by Neil Gaiman, published in 1993 as a Sandman spinoff.
One day in every century Death takes on human flesh, better to comprehend what the lives she takes must feel like, to taste the bitter tang of mortality.
This is the price she must pay for being the divider of the living from all that has gone before, all that must come after.
Featuring almost everyone's favorite anthropomorphic personification of kicking the bucket, being cute. Also spoilers.
Okay, I'll be the first to admit that this is a fairly crappy attempt at a synopsis...I chose scans almost soley on their Death-being-cute quotients. Besides, I have so little to offer to this community in terms of scans...
It begins with a kid named Sexton contemplating the meaningless of life while he composes his suicide note. He ends up wandering into the local junkyard and getting trapped beneath a refridgerator, only to have Death (manifested as a sixteen year-old girl named Didi) come and rescue him.
She takes him back to her apartment to fix him up (and mend his pants):
Previously, a woman at the food market had told him all about she had recently been orphaned...
Featuring the reappearance of Death's goldfish!
Sexton leaves the appartment bitching about crazy people when he's assulted by none other than Mad Hettie, who's been searching for her heart and wants Didi to help her find it. She takes Sexton hostage with a broken bottle, and Didi agrees to look for it while she enjoys a night on the town.
The next issue, Sexton continues being a bit of a pill....
....probably because no one ever gives him free stuff for being cute and charming:
Meanwhile, some creepy blind guy named The Eremite (possibly Mister E) who knows who Didi really is makes nefarious plots to get to her ankh in order to control her powers, ect. Didi and Sexton stop by a club called the Thundercut to see Hazel and Foxglove (the lesbian couple from A Game of You). Foxglove sings a song about dead people:
Meanwhile, the blind guy calling himself The Eremite sends his hunky accomplice to lure Didi away to "a better party", but she refuses to leave without Sexton.
Needless to stay, Bad Stuff happens, but there's no need to spoil it.
By the next morning, Death's time has run out, and Didi dies. Very prettily, I might add....
So yeah. Supposedly Gaiman's supposed to be making a movie out of this sometime, which is peachy keen if anything is!
