By popular request, Black Widow as drawn by George Perez.

As you might expect, the plot kicks in. But first, one last look at that costume?

GODDAMN.

So Natasha's handler/father figure, Ivan, has been kidnapped and Natasha goes undercover, working with a treasonous American scientist.

Really, what did you expect to happen if you slept with Terry Long? Who is literally a dirty Commie?

Uh, Madame Natasha, they kinda did you a favor? Remember the part where he betrayed you in favor of SCIENCE? Not a good long-term prospect, anyone who does that. Just ask Sue Storm. But back to the fanservice.

But wouldn't you know it, Tasha runs afoul of the League of Ethnic Stereotypes some hired mercenaries, who eventually capture her. I pondered whether to post this and appeal to all the bondage fans, but hell, it's BLACK WIDOW HOG-TIED by a COWGIRL (hi Google!). Besides, no one sane could post this next picture and not BONDAGE of a character played by SCARLETT JOHANNSON.

Uh... yeah. Anyone remember that bit in Astonishing X-Men where Scott hallucinates a 'new costume' with a tutu and such? Apparently, he wasn't whacked out, just nostalgic.

Neither are we, Natasha. Neither are we. Couldn't she just take her catsuit off and put it back on? Quiet, you!

Then of course, there is the HOT SEMI-NAKED CATFIGHT.

And the rest, as they say, is history.

Aw, Snapdragon. Awesome look, totally lame. And look, the loser that Marvel made to keep the name Iron Maiden around in case they ever needed a distaff Iron Man.

Cool. Nice scans. You took good care of this book (?).Who do you think came up with the whole "tear you costume up to make rope" gag ????

Which comic is this from?

This looks great! (Of course it looks great--It's George Perez art!) Sorry, but I didn't see anything denoting which book these scans came from. I'd be interested in trying to hunt this down...

Marvel Fanfare. It was two hot,hot isuues.

This type of work just adds to the notion that Artists like GP have a vast vault of porn stories they drew over the years that shall be release upon their demise...

Apparently one of the creators of Superman drew a lot of bondage art.

Perez is always fun and I'll always thank him for defining "zoftig" for me, but the One True Widow is Gene Colan's. With an honourable mention for Franks Miller's Natasha Kinski-esque redesign in DD.

True , but I think the idea for this post is to wxpalin the look to of the Scalet Johaansen Black Widow. there are like 4 versions of the character with very dffernet looks that reflected the time. I personally seriously go for the FM one in the gray uniform with the shory dykie hair :)

Fair enough, I'm off topic and you're correct, ScaJo is looking more Perez than Colan. But Gene's Widow - damn. (Interestingly, his Widow looks quite like Emily Blunt, the original casting choice.)
And if you like the FM Widow, check out Nastassia in Cat People - I bet that's where Frank got the look. Short hair, acrobatic, teh sexay...
(ps Perez really did define "zoftig" for me - it was in an interview in a magazine in the 80's. Now, if I hear the word, I think of the orange girl in Teen Titans.)

Snapdragon? "Superheroes are a cowardly and superstitious lot. What can I call myself to strike fear into their hearts? I know, I'll name myself after a flower. And I'll wear a costume that has insect antennae and a snake wrapped around. They make almost no thematic sense and they'll probably slow me down while fighting, but they'll look cool."

After reading this, I checked an old issue of Amazing Adventures to see if she always talked about herself in the third person. She did, but it's less annoying when she does it to sound intimidating in a fight than here when she thinks about herself in the third person.

Things have really changed since that issue of Amazing Adventures. At one point she says she'll change into her jumpsuit in the car, while still fully clothed, she says "Eyes front, Ivan" (her chauffeur at this point), and then you get two panels of the car. No shots of her changing, not even a perspective from the rear-view mirror. Obviously, Colan had no idea what was important in comic book art.

#3. For some reason, I have 5 or 6 issues from back then, including the one with the scene posted below. It's odd because this was a year or two before I started buying comic books, so I probably got them as back issues. But why Amazing Adventures? I never had any particular interest in The Inhumans and the stories the Black Widow had would have gone over my head at that age.

Apparently Snapdragon also forgot her pants at home. Maybe she wasn't quite old enough to dress herself yet.

Then again Diamondback killed her later, so I guess she never managed to beat the lame-o factor.

Better than all right, though by later standards, you don't see much there. Just a bare arm and a bit of back.

Where's that scan from? The inking doesn't look right for some reason. Maybe I'm just misremembering.

I thought it might be a reprinted version where the colors were touched up. The hair seems off, too dark, closer to brown than red. Maybe I ever have it in a reprint. I know I've got it, but I have no idea where.

The story was originally from Amazing Adventures #5. I scanned it out of one of those old tabloid-sized reprint books...Giant Superhero Holiday Grab-Bag.

Interesting. I'm not sure if I have Amazing Adventures #5, but I do have the reprint and there's no red at all in her hair in the copy I have. The next panel, where she's zipping up her jumpsuit, would also have proven your point nicely. Her hair is red in that one, so I guess part of her superhero costume involved hair dye. Clever, but maybe too time consuming to be practical.
