This was created by guys who'd worked on Wonder Woman and Warlord, so it's comparable to those levels of violence.
I think the near rapes were more disturbing. The one in the first issue is stock sword and sorcery. Pretty graphic and adult. I think they backed off from the too adultness. The next one with Prince Carnelian was treated as a joke by Amethyst and proof that he was a doofus. The completely offscreen rape of the eldest Princess Emerald by Dark Opal and her subsequent suicide was extremely disturbing and upsetting.
I had a vague understanding at the time. But the outcome of those things seemed reasonable, if horrible? Her mother, who gave her to Dark Opal, goes insane with guilt, torturing her own advisor. And in an effort to aid the fight against Dark Opal, her advisor--who has known her since she was a child--murders the insane Lady Emerald. It was very sad, yet not unreasonable to me.
