I was in the target age range of this book when it came out, and I loved every moment of it. Girls don't dwell on those kind of things. We visually scanned the pictures and moved on to drool over pictures of Topaz.
Topaz was the "girls' fantasy guy" - that blonde hot guy that every girl would fall in love with (me included).
The great thing about Amethyst was that every girl could envision themselves in her place - a 13 year old girl who slips off to another dimension, where she is a 21 year old princess, having adventures, with a really hot prince in love with her. Then she gets to save the world.
IMHO, Amethyst was ahead of its time. I teach the target age range, and I know some girls who would just eat this book up (but since there is nothing like it available, they turn to manga).
