From G.I. Joe #98. After a long absence away from Cobra and presumed dead (murdered and replaced by Crimson Guardsman Fred VIII), Cobra Commander returns with a vegeance. Mindbender and Raptor find out when they're ambushed when the later shows the former where Cobra Commander's body was buried.

After revealing what he's been doing this entire time (making an insane ammount of money via arms deals secretly, keeping a low profile, and planting all his most loyal troops by his side and in Cobra for a coup) he decides it's finally time to return to Cobra and be back on top as defacto leader. But first there's some unfinished business to attend too. Namely Fred VIII, Zartan, Billy, Croc Master, Firefly, and some others bickering (an Iron Grenadier General and two others who I have no idea) over if the current Cobra Commander amongst them is an imposter. Suddenly:







Amusingly during this next page which I had to cut Billy figures out Zartan killed the Blind Master. Also this act attracts everyone on Cobra Island watching the once landlocked freighter go into the volcano.





Of this act only Zartan, Billy, and Firefly survive. The first two dig their way out and barely just live to tell the tale as mostly everyone on board the ship perished due to food poisoning. Firefly was presumed dead until turning up very much alive much later on.

The bastard escaped by finding a stash of B.A.T.s (Battle Android Troopers) in the Freighter and activated them. They dug a escape route for him while he laid back relaxing not telling a soul of his discovery. He then uses the corpse of Serpentor as his stand-in so nobody would be the wiser.

Dr. Mindbender died and only returns due to a clone Cobra Commander created via the man's research and realized that even though he was a traitor, he needed Mindbender's genius for further Cobra projects.
