The lesbian moments of Wonder Woman

Themyscira is an island populated entirely by women, and as you can see, they freely admit to most of them engaging in same-sex relationships:

I can´t help but wonder if "the way of Narcissus" is a fancy word for masturbation. Either way, as I read my way through the post-Crisis Wonder Woman series, I can´t help but wonder why I´ve yet to see any physical expressions of love between the amazons, the hetero couples are certainly showing their affection for each other. Is it that while acknowledging the existence of girl-on-girl sex on Themyscira, the censorship or DCs editors of the time forbade any actual displays of same-sex interaction? I tracked down the Perez run and began reading, trying to see if I could find any open displays of amazon love, and it didn´t take many issues before I stopped to wonder:

Dianas face and thoughts here made me think "love at first sight?", but as I thought about it, I assumed she was just taken aback by seeing the first non-adult woman in her life. Then later on came this scene, that seemed to suggest Hippolyte and Phillipus had a thing going:

As I pondered this, I found myself rooting for them, because as I thought about it, I thought them to be a very romantic pairing; strongly devoted to each other, but even more devoted to their respective duties, Hippolyte wanting to save her daughter and Phillipus fighting to defend Themyscira, those duties sometimes causing them to physically face each other in combat, as had been the case here. But then, just a few pages later, Hippolyte shared a deep kiss with Heracles, pretty much crushing my dreams of the two of them. Had I once again been cheated out of a lesbian couple on Themyscira? For a while, yes, but then came this scene some issues later:

Now is it common for the amazons of Themyscira to sleep in double beds, or is that Menalippes amazon lover sleeping next to her? Having been cheated in the past, I decided on the former, but then this exchange came later:

Now the amazons are throwing declarations of love around freely, but calling somebody "my beloved" seems more than just friendly. And not many issues later, Hippolyte makes a remark that suggests at the least a close bond between Menalippe and Penelope:

So perhaps I had finally found my lesbian amazon couple? As I continue reading, I can only hope I will find my answer, and find more pairings in the process. If you know of any moments I haven´t listed here, do tell me, in the meantime, here´s a scene that made me move in for a closer look, to decipher whether that was just a cheek kiss shown from an awkward angle, or if Diana and Hippolyte really, *REALLY* likes each other.

First of all, you need to put the bulk of your post (all images over 300x400 pixels) under an LJ-cut. If you're not sure how to do this, you can copy and paste the code found in our posting guidelines.

Secondly, I don't know if it's just me but all your image links appear to be broken. You can also find code for posting an image in the posting guidelines.

I can see the images by right-clicking on them and clicking "view image."

And "the way of Narcissus" is most definitely a fancy word for masturbation. I can imagine the reverend in question sitting bolt upright at night in sudden moral shock as he belatedly realizes just what she was telling him.

Oh great...

Just tried the copy and paste thing with cut-codes, and used the "embed images" while posting, neither seem to have worked.

That's because you're not linking to the images, but to the pages they're on. The first image, for example, should be "http://img339.imageshack.us/img339/9748/ww38.jpg" not "http://img339.imageshack.us/i/ww38.jpg/"

Hey, I know you... Or rather, I know your filks. "Do You Hear the Pipes, Cthulhu?" and "Redshirt", among many others, right?

The cut is working.

The problem with the images is that you are using the address for the imageshack pages the images are on (i.e. http://img339.imageshack.us/i/ww38.jpg/ ) whereas you need to use the address for the images (i.e, http://img339.imageshack.us/img339/9748/ww38.jpg ).

Well, I don´t know how I got the cut thing to work, because it didn´t work for me the first time, but I did get the images thing worked out, thanks for your help.

I can´t help but wonder if "the way of Narcissus" is a fancy word for masturbation.

Given that Narcissus is the literal epitome of "self love", I think that's EXACTLY what it means.

Oh, and Penelope and Menalippe are indeed lovers IIRC.

I'm sorry I can't remember exactly where, since it's been a long time, but I know that there was some big battle or something where Menalippe died, and in the following issue Diana or someone said of Penelope, "I can't imagine what her life will be like without her great love Menalippe."

It was around the time of WAR OF THE GODS, so I'd place it around issue #61 or #62. Don't have those on me right now, but anyone else?

Being a virgin, back in the day when the term was coined and thus when the Amazon's initially learned it, really just means "hasn't had sex with a man"...

There's an issue - I can't remember which one, unfortunately, but long after Perez - where an Amazon is in a Themysciran hospital sitting next to one of the cots and talking to its unconscious occupant in a way that certainly seemed to imply that they were lovers. Sorry I can't be more specific; I got the feeling that it was one of those 'you'd understand this better if you'd read the story five issues before this one' situations.

What would you say about this LGBT comics created by Mark Eden? In one of his interview he said that he was inspired by the lesbian Wonder Woman. Frankly speaking, I wouldn't rely on any of them =)
