As someone who has to teach about copyright to students, I can see their point. For the most part, there is a violation of "fair use" practices (which is only about 10% of media for educational purposes).
On the other hand, what about books that are long out of print? Comics that are not being put into graphic novels or compilations? Things that people either aren't able to find at their LCS or will have to pay more than the book originally sold for?
In cases where a book is no longer being published or the issues are past a certain point of age, I think they're overreacting, because otherwise fans would not be able to access things from the past... which are often what interests people in books of the future.
