One page from Marvel Divas
Picked up Marvel Divas. Didn't care for it. Below the cut: one page, that made me go "huh."

Monica is talking with Black Cat and Patsy about how Brother Voodoo is wooing/stalking her. It all started when...

Damn that Stark and him re-directing the resources that could have gone to the Katrina Relief Effort to him and his Civil War! *melodramatic hand gestures*

I'd like to qualify this statement by saying I do NOT know much about Katrina, but my understanding of it is that New Orleans has a high African-American population that weren't able to leave during Katrina, while white people were, and that BY AN AMAZING COINCIDENCE, New Orleans wasn't evaced.

Is everyone else talking about things said on pages that aren't posted here? Cos I read this page three times over and i can't see any mention of white people! Am I going crazy? D: D:

It is so weird when real-world disasters appear in comics. It's just.. off.

Ok I'm confused... that highway sign says New Orleans, but in the background that's the Palace Casino in Biloxi, MS, right at the foot of the Highway 90 bridge to Ocean Springs. The only explanation that isn't a mistake is that's meant to be a "New Orleans (x) Miles" sign from the highway. The mistake explanation is the artist based this on a real photo with the Palace in the background and didn't know where the pic was taken and just assumed that it must have been New Orleans. Which is plausible considering that most people outside the area think that's the only place the storm hit.

Not that I'm inclined to give the creators of this the benefit of the doubt, but maybe it's supposed to be an interchange sign? This way to New Orleans!

*sigh*

Four years later and we're STILL overpoliticizing Katrina instead of focusing that energy on, oh, I don't know, FIXING OUR GODDAMNED LEVEES. YOU KNOW, THOSE THINGS THAT BROKE THAT CAUSED THE FLOODING IN THE FIRST PLACE.

Yes, I'm sure there is plenty of blame to go around, but can we do it after the necessary shit gets done? I said it four years ago and I'm saying it again now.

I mean, I live here, and we are STILL repairing Katrina damage. IT'S BEEN FOUR YEARS. WHAT THE HELL.

Word. Also, please to be resolving the destruction of our wetlands, government. If the storm had hit 30 years ago, the storm surge would have dispersed before getting anywhere near the city.

This page is offensive to me on at least three different levels. 1) It plays a humanitarian disaster of epic scale for cheap 'edge' points, 2)it portrays racism on the part of the characters - which wouldn't necessarily be a bad thing if that racism were dealt with - and implies that racism that is okay because the characters are non-white, 3) It implies that white people didn't care about and weren't affected by Katrina - that, in fact, even white superheroes didn't care about Katrina.

Way to fail, comic. Way to fail.

You know, I'd assume Monica's "you white people" comment was entirely tongue-in-cheek, probably accompanied by a bemused eyeroll.

If you gave T'Challa a cape and a couple of belt pouches on that page, you wouldn't be able to differentiate him from Batman. It's the glowy-white-eyes-in-shadow I think.

I really dislike the way Monica seems to being handled in Marvel Divas. It's like she's the requisite 'sassy black chick who makes ironic quips about the stupid whities, which is fine, though, 'cause she's black, and black people say these things. Also, we're totally hip and down with it. Really.'
I mean, for cryin' out loud, has she EVER been written like that prior to MD? I haven't read very much of her, I'll admit, but none of it has had her sound like this. It's preposterous. It's like Hudlin set in stone how a black character must now be written. Blech.
And speaking as a white person - no, we did not cause Katrina. The Bush Administration caused Katrina - the disaster that it turned into, anyway - and simply calling them white people is an oversimplification of vast proportions. I mean, does the name Condoleeza Rice ring a bell? She's black, and she was definitely a member of the Bush Administration - and, oh yes, there were all those corrupt and lazy New Orleans politicos who couldn't be bothered to keep the levies in workable condition, and a whole host of other people who were involved in one way or another, SOME OF WHICH, I'M SURE, WERE NOT WHITE.
I've said it before, and I'll say it again - racism is racism, no matter which way it goes. There are a hell of a lot of white people who have been and are continuing to be responsible for heinous acts, but point the finger at THEM, not the rest of us palefaces - and if you've GOT to point the finger at the race as a whole, point it at us for the things that we're actually guilty of.
