Current music:Gang Of Four ~ "He'd Send In The Army"

Renee's bit from 'Tec 854
I'd been waffling over whether I wanted to post this just yet. I guess I'd had some idea where I'd Start a series on Renee when I was done with Vic, but I'd have so much to go through since I'd want to start at least with her part in Gotham Central if not earlier that by the time I got to her Tec back-up it'd be old hat.

Strike while the iron's hot, they say. Not only that, but I was looking at Cully Hamner's design sketches and there's no way I couldn't share them! There's too much good here.

(2 2/3 pages out of 8)

I really like their setup here, getting cases over the internet and choosing the ones worth investigating. A pro-bono super-P.I. is a really fun idea! Seeing Tot play a running op for Renee also makes me happy, they have a good thing going here. Monty Python quotes are overdone, but it's par for the course when you're dealing over THE INTERNET.

Renee meets up with a potential case. The guy gives her the story.

It's kind of funny how her hair looked black indoors, but the sun's giving it a more brunette tint here. It would be interesting if it were the bonding gas giving it a slightly different color for a bit added anonymity, but she'd have to have a different variant of it or something for that, because...

...She wears Vic's colors as The Question! I could not have squeed more when I saw this. Anyway, she finds what looks like a kidnapping/porn ring (well, there's a camera in front of a bed, what else am I supposed to think?) and runs into the guys behind it on the last page. It's gonna be a showdown!
Can't wait for the next one.

I'd mentioned Cully Hamner's design sketches helped inspire me to make this post, so why not share them?

As we've seen in the story, we have around-the-house Renee, on-the-job Renee, and meeting-a-client Renee respectively.

What no leisure suit? :D
The Question has always been an identity that knows how to accessorize (sometimes really poorly, though!), Renee should be no different.

"Obviously is a total badass" is a wording that always makes me happy for some reason.
And Charlie's hat! Awww. (though i guess it is pre-treated for the bonding gas?)

I want to see her in this suit more often, it is so damn cool. And the "holy shit look at how goddamn cool i look" has always kind of been half the reason I love The Question so much. I mean, look at my icon! If The Question is about any two things, it's getting to the bottom of shit and looking unbelievably cool while doing it.

Cully Hamner's Tot is adorable. I want to adopt him as my grandpa.

What do you guys think?

Glad to see Renee as the Question has no complaints when it comes to handling dogs. Batman is such a noob.

If one of her arms were down, but with both of them up like that the only thing I expect her to drop is some mad Jeet Kune Do.

So Renee is black now?
I like long haired Renee. But instead of complaiing non stop I will say I love the costumes.

I'm inclined to believe your experience with blacks and Hispanics is pretty limited if you think she looks more like the former than the latter.

This is cool and everything, but why would Renee's favorite weapon be the nunchaku? As everyone who as watched Deadliest Warrior knows, it's not an especially effective weapon. Also, she was a cop for a long time; if she wants a short range, light-weight, bludgeoning weapon, wouldn't her years of police training and experience incline her more toward a nightstick or baton? For that matter, why not a pistol, or, for less-than-lethal, a taser or bean-bag gun?

That being said, this does look cool, and the art is great. I have to admit I actually prefer the black-and-white designs at the bottom. I think it might be interesting to see this series done altogether in black-and-white, or rather greyscale, since I think it would lend it an appropriate, if literal, noirish feel.

Yes. YES.

Loved the Renne's feature--it was one of the things that instantly sold me about the new Det. :D

If the girl is really a victim, I'll be incredibly disappointed. My money is on her being involved with the kidnapping/porn gang thing.

Not a fan of the blondish hair.

Love the hat, not so much the belly shirt. Seems like a civilian version of Jim Lee's Huntress uniform and just as impractical. And I think Gotham can only handle one bare belly crime fighter at a time.

Actually I think her hair is black when she is talking to that guy, my hair is black and sometimes when the sun reflects off of it, it gives off a slight Burnett tint, Printay (slang for school principal) once mistakenly thought that I had died it brown, I nodded my head to the side and he saw that it was merely the light bouncing off it.

My favorite costume is the second to last one with her in black pants and the one with the num-chucks. I prefer that she uses a Police Baton, TV has proven that num-chucks are inefficient weapons, sticks and swords are the most ideal and practical weapons.

designs are pretty good, but I lean more towards the androgynous look - somehow, she does not look as much of a cypher if her gender is immediately obvious.

As for the nunchuk thing, I agree...it's not a particularly effective weapon. I would suggest a tonfa - it's close to a nightstick, and it can be packed with more hidden goodies.

am not sure if my other post got through...

I like the designs, though I would lean more to costumes that are more androgynous.

Howabout using a tonfa (or a pair of them) instead, rather than the nunchuks? Or, you can use a cane-like weapon, though I would have to say that it may visually look a bit too old school.

Okay, wow, the sketches? I am art-gasming. Simple, clean, yet oozing with style and substance. Why have I not heard about Cully Hamner before? Joining my list of awesome artists.

I love all the designs, even the bellyshirt. There's something wonderfully perverse about giving the Question a definite female edge (and I say this as someone who still isn't quite sure about Renee being the Question...I somehow imagined that it should go to Tim). However, her last costume, with the black shirt and single-button sportscoat, is absolute WIN. I want to see this.

And as another poster noted, I think that this series could totally do with some noir - simple black and white, maybe some greytone. The sketches show how strong it is without colours, and while the colours can help, here, they don't really add anything special.

Normally I'd be rolling my eyes at the belly shirt but oddly it works for me. Maybe it's due to masculinity of the rest of the outfit or because she actually has *gasp* abs.
