How Rose became the Ravager

This is from Teen Titans #1/2, by Geoff Johns and Ivan Reis. It's collected in the Teen Titans Vol. 2: Family Lost TPB.

This is Wade DeFarge, the third Ravager.

The Titans burst through the wall and attack DeFarge; they had gotten an anonymous phone call about Rose's whereabouts, warning them that she was in danger.

Then the place is filled with gas, knocking everyone out. When the Titans wake up, Rose and DeFarge are gone.

Meanwhile, the Titans have unsuccessfully tried finding Rose. Wonder Girl asks if there are any ideas about who put the hit on her.

Cyborg replies "Yeah--

Wade DeFarge? As in a forged Wade?

I am suitably amused.

"I... I can't.
"I can't use the gun.
"Give me your sword."

I really enjoyed those three panels.

Aw, Rose needs a hug.

Marked difference from the self-destructive creature we've seen of late. From the sound of things, Rose is going to be getting her inner woobie on again so that's a plus I suppose.

I really hate how Slade has been portrayed as a generic villain lately. Sure he started out that way, but in later issues of Wolfman's Titans and in his own series, he grew into a complex, flawed and even likeable character. Now it's all "ZOMG he's so eeeeevil".

I think he's fairly complex here - I mean, hiring his crazy half-brother as an assassin to get rid of his old friend, who was acting as guardian to his daughter, all so he could ultimately have his daughter off his brother is pretty twisted, all right, but look at his reasoning. By his way of thinking, this is a reconciliation, as close to an act of love as he's capable of - he's trying to bring his daughter into the family business. Sure, by doing so he's severely screwing up her life, but he doesn't see it that way - he's proud of his career as Deathstroke, and he wants his daughter to share in the glory. It's twisted logic, no doubt - a logic that winds up causing three unnecessary deaths. But you can't say there isn't a positive sentiment behind it.

The old guy isn't Wintergreen; he was killed by a Jericho-possessed Deathstroke in Teen Titans #1.

Oh. OK, my bad. That's an awful shame, though; he was a good supporting character - kind of like Deathstroke's version of Alfred.

One of the few good things about Geoff Johns's Titans was Rose's brief stint as a villain. She was one of the few supervillains I've seen that actually managed to be genuinely creepy.
