Ninja Turtles Adventures #23

As promised, the first apperance of Slash. It all starts with Krang being stranded on a planet that's a toxic waste dump in Dimension X. This was about the point when Adventures really went away from the 80s cartoon formula.

Just before this Shredder and Krang where defeated. Krang was sent here, Shredder to prison (of course he escaped and had just terrorized the turtles in the previous two issues which is when I got on the book), the Technodrome destroyed, Bebop and Rocksteady put on a animal utopia. Krang is still smarting from the encounter sans robo body:

Kills me I cannot show ya Bellybomb's grand entrance. Quite a memorable intro as well with the guards reading off the numerous list of his crimes before he mentions, "You forgot to mention my unpaid parking tickets." Real pity this was his only appearance in this series with these three issues, he was a fun sadistic character.

Anyway...

Bellybomb is soon free in the next panel and the two wreck havoc slaughtering the remaining guards.

Due to the limit had to leave out the final cut which was Krang saying their next stop would be Earth. Of course that doesn't happen just yet. They take a side trip since Krang doesn't bother to disable program as it take's the trio to said animal planet where Bebop and Rocksteady are.

But I'll make up for that by giving you some bonus Slash with him meeting the turtles for the first time in the next issue:

For those who want to see the rest of the story, I posted the Shredder parts and Slash's end here:

Next up for me, how the Shredder got involved in Future Shark Trilogy and how he forged an alliance with Vermintor X and Armaggon.

I always had a soft spot for Slash. Mostly because of the TMNT videogames, but a soft spot anyway.

God I hated Slash in Turtles In Time. Worst boss in the game!

Did we ever get a backstory for this version of Slash? What he did on his homeworld that got him exiled, what's up with him and that palm tree anyway? I think in the cartoon he was just Bebop and Rocksteady's pet turtle that Shredder would've totally blew a gasket over if he knew they had, and who they mutated so they'd have somebody to boss around. You get the feeling this guy's story is a bit more complicated. And, also, bloody.

Ah, Slash. So psychotic, yet so sympathetic. I love that "help or die" ramble.

I wish I still had these. Bebop and Rocksteady on that one planet, going off to live their lives in peace, was so much fucking awesome. Of course, Krang HAD to bring them back, but STILL.

Well, he's just a roving psychopath, isn't he? An auspicious start for Slash - his character is nicely summed up in a few panels. If you've GOT to employ that sort of exposition-heavy writing, having someone who would believably talk to random strangers like that is a good way to do it.
However, I wish he'd get rid of that zigzag sword of his. I'm sorry, but that thing barely even looks functional. A sharp, straight blade slices. A sharp, pointed blade jabs. A straight, serrated blade saws. So what do you call a blade that may be sharp, but is not straight enough to slice, not serrated enough to saw (and too jagged to effectively put serrations on), and with A BUTTON ON THE TIP, like a fencing foil, so it can't jab anyone, either? Useless, is what I call it. At most, he could open up a wound or two with the jagged edges, but he'd have to use a very awkward style that would be easy to defend yourself against - really, the thing would only work as a parrying weapon, and he's clearly not using it for that.
