I don't think that's what happened at all. I thought it was quite clear that nobody actually tried to kill them. What happened was: Victor separated out this weird music to play at the prom, from some sort of encrypted military signal. That music was part of a 'homing beacon' for the missile that hit them. It went off course, and instead of the intended target, it struck the Runaways. So quite like a random car accident, even if Victor unknowingly contributed to it.
As to the character moments I can't pin down much specifics that I found off, just comments here and there that individually aren't all that out of place but overall led to a feeling of it being not _quite_ right...
I think the biggest thing that I can pin down was the suggestion that Karolina might be in such a weakened state that she'd do something she'd regret with Chase.
