Dan Dare is Awesome: Meeting the Mekon.
After much delay, I have been able to obtain the omnibus trade of this series, and I have to say that I recommend it highly.

Here's one of my favourite scenes from the series

Dare launches his secret plan by flying into the ship of the Mekon (former dictator of Venus). Here he meets his archenemy, as well as the UK Prime Minister who has sold out the entire planet in order to save his job in a post-Mekon controlled Earth,

Ah the Mekon, when little green men were REAL little green men!

I love "We always fight squalid little men like you", you can FEEL the contempt in every syllable.

I think that it's mildly amusing that his version of Mekon appears to be riffing Davros (genetically engineering monsters, floating about in a life support system, styled heavily on Nazis), yet I think that the Mekon predates him by at least ten years or so doesn't he?

25 years (Mekon 1950, Davros 1975) and the similarities have been there from the outset I think.

I, for one, welcome our new Mekon overlords.

At least with Treens you stand a chance of appealing to their better nature. Daleks? Not so much!

Yeah. :) The Daleks are sort of like the Terminator, except they can use emotional blackmail and sarcasm.

Which makes them even all the more awesome. ^^

Pretty much, most of the background info is explained in-story, anything else can be picked up by briefly skimming the character's wikipedia page.

Dan Dare is the RAF in sapce, with an added helping of the adventures of a young Winston Churchill thrown in for good measure.

Oh but get some of the original albums first. It's all space kink with stiff upper lips!

Why yes, this scene fully deserves its mention on TV Tropes' Crowning Moment of Awesome page, why do you ask?
