Captain Boomerang: Father and Son

This is from the Identity Crisis miniseries, by Brad Meltzer and Rags Morales.

Boomerang is first introduced in #2.

In #3...

In #4...

Later...

In #5...

Later, Jack Drake receives a package from someone who knows he's Robin's father, with a gun and a note telling him to protect himself. Worried, he calls Oracle.

In #6, everyone assumes that Boomerang was the man who killed Sue Dibny and tried killing Jean Loring.

In #7, it's revealed that Jean Loring, who accidentally killed Sue Dibny and made it look like a murder, is behind the whole thing.

Also, does anyone know when Digger got overweight?

Also, does anyone know when Digger got overweight?

I figured it was because of his age; a man DOES tend to get a bit fat after he reaches his forties.

But was there a specific issue?

Probably not. I don't really remember just how long it had been since Digger had shown up in a comic before IC came around.

There is the Diet Boomerang Effect, though I'm not sure that's what DC had in mind. I will always hate this series. A thousand Boomers does not equal one Sue Dibney.

Who is the new boomerang's mother?

Meloni Thawne. Owen and Bart are half brothers.

And when are they going to address it?? When??? Argh, come on Johns you love the melodrama! And here's free melodrama for the picking. It's like the storyline is a cardboard box on a curb labeled "free kittens".

Johns is the one who *wrote* that they are half-brothers. It's in the ROGUES WAR trade of Flash.

I hope he's saving it for something special, since it should hit the both of them like a locomotive...

As with everything Meltzer wrote for DC, it's fanfic.

Actually, based on the artist's notes at the back of the trade, I dare say this is more due to Rags Morales himself. He likes to base his characters on actors, and Boomerbutt was based on Ron Jeremy.

I do love that the artist was careful to make Digger and Owen look similar.

And the fact that Batman was there at his father's death and *ignoring* him is probably a heavy contribution to the way that Owen gets on so poorly with superheroes -- that and the fact that he had to go to the Rogues to get Digger's body back for a proper burial.

I know Identity Crisis is vulgar, left a bad taste in our mouths and really misuse characters, but I still think the story itself is pretty great. Sure, maybe it's better regarded as fanfic, but it's a good read.

These parts especially. I remember reading the Jack Drake/Boomerbutt sequence for the first time and was really on the edge of my seat as Batman was just gunning the car to Tim's house. Morales' art gets the credit there. I also liked the subplot with Tim and his dad about Tim's crimefighting, too. And I pretty much loved the Owen/Boomerbutt relationship.

Oh, yes. As an a stand-alone Elseworlds it would've kicked ass, but great as the art and the storytelling was, it completely and disrespectfully ignored established continuity. Not to mention that the dumbass retcons that were put in place so the plot could work. Also, Sue Dibny's death and Tim's Dad dying (while the scenes themselves were well-written) just felt like drive-by shootings that fucked up the characters' lives in a major and unnecessary fashion.

It's not IC itself, but the repercussions it had on the DCU that I can't stand.

Hopefully Flash Rebirth'll explain why he can have super speed if Digger's his dad and Meloni's his mom.

Wasn't Meloni a Thawne? I thought her crazy prez dad was experimenting on her with Velocity 9 or something, but they couldn't figure out why she wasn't getting any faster. They didn't know she was pregnant.

...or maybe I read that in a fan-theory somewhere. It sounds plausible enough to me, though. Of course, if it is a fan theory, DC probably couldn't come up with a more workable story if you paid them. Which we do.

Two disgusting and needless things that happened in this. One was Sue Dibny's death. But the other was the utterly gratuitous murder of Tim Drake's father.
