I think the events you have described are the outcome of the "dark and gritty" Batman that you (and those in charge of DC) seem to think is the "most successful one." The idea of such a dark Batman is truly a modern idea; frankly, I find the themes of familial bonds/friendship/what have you in Dark Cat's comics to ring truer to the sentiments of the past 60 years of Batman comics than I do the image of Batman as a broody jerk, which has really only emerged in the past decade or so. So when you say that this comic is everything that Batman is not, I must disagree with you.
Looking at your later comment regarding your dislike of Robin, I understand why you would dislike this. I personally find Robin to be an essential part of the Batman mythos (he is my favorite character, so I am somewhat biased in this respect), so to each their own, I guess.
