I'm reminded of a couple of things here. One is how incredible Byrne and Austin's art is at this stage--there really isn't anyone at this level at this point in comics, save Perez at his absolute best, although Frank Miller is starting to develop. With a few exceptions (those green curtains, most notably), everything here is exquisite; it's about as good as the medium (still being printed on newsprint) is capable of being at this stage
The other thing is how badly, horrifically overwritten it is. It's as if Claremont either doesn't realize that there's a visual aspect to comics or doesn't trust it. Either way, about 1/2 to 2/3 of his dialogue (mostly thought balloons) and narration could be eliminated. The first post-cut panel, for example--you don't need to be told that Wyngarde's control is starting to slip; you can see it in her expression. Or Wolverine's whole "side o' the angels" thing here--STFU Logan already! (I'm suddenly realizing that Garth Ennis has an excuse for the way that he wrote Wolverine in that Punisher two-parter--he probably read some of Claremont's old dialogue and pushed it a little bit further.) His already-massive ego aside, I'm starting to realize why Byrne left the book not too long after this.
