One Perfect Moment - Quasar (The PROPER one :P :) )
Back in the early 90's a new cosmic series emerged from Marvel which was unlike nearly all their other output.

The adventures of Quasar were a throwback to the days of space opera. Quasar was Wendell Vaughn, a normal, decent, everyday kind of guy, a former SHIELD agent (Who never became a field agent because he lacked the necessary "killer instinct"), who only put on the legendary Quantum Bands (as worn by the original Marvel Boy (Well, sort of, it got complicated once Agents of ATLAS came along, but we'll gloss over that)) to prevent them falling into the hands of AIM (And this is despite knowing that the Bands had incinerated the last two people to wear them (As it turns out, the Bands would turn on anyone who tried to use them to kill, so Wendell's flaw was actually the thing that saved him)

He was a recurring character in Marvel Two In One, as the security chief for the Vault, an alternative energy research centre which tried to work out how so many beings could manipulate such astounding quantities of energy; Klaw, the Living Laser, Wundarr and the like. After that he sort of disappeared, to return in his own series some years later.

The series, like the Vault appearances, were written by the late, great Mark Gruenwald, who indulged his extraordinary knowledge of Marvel continuity and history to pepper the series with a host of unjustly forgotten and ignored space characters. It was a blast!

Unlike most of the other heroes debuting in their own series about this time he wasn't dark, or gritty, or grim, he was an ordinary guy in an extraordinary situation, an adventurer and hero, but also a flawed human one, who travelled in space, but didn't lose his sense of wonder about his mission, or the places he went. He worked for a cosmic potato for heavens sake! :)

I LOVED both the character and the series (and it deserves a bit of a posting sometime perhaps). I've always liked heroes who are, at their core, ordinary people, dealing with extraordinary circumstances and coming out on top through determination and courage.

So, at any rate, the "Cosmos in Collision" storyline around the end of the second year came as something of a shock, as it brought to a head the story threads that had been being played since the start of the title. It also brought the series into a disturbing and warped place quite unlike anything it had done before. the art was darker and scratchier, by Greg Capullo, rather than the smooth Paul Ryan art of earlier issues.

Quasar was an agent of Eon, who was an agent of Infinity, one of THE big four cosmic entities in the Marvel universe (Eternity, Infinity, Oblivion and Death). His "opposite number" was Maelstrom, an old villain who was an agent of Oblivion.

This moment is at almost the end of the downward slide for Wendell. When Maelstrom discovered that he couldn't remove the bands from the captive Quasar, he took the easy way out, and cut the poor guys hands off just below the elbow, but used his powers to ensure he wouldn't bleed to death. Until Quasar died, the bands couldn't even be removed from the severed arms, and Maelstrom wanted to investigate the link between the Quantum Bands and the wearer, and now he had a guinea-pig to... try things out on.

So, to summarise, in this scene Quasar is powerless, maimed, helpless, completely isolated from any of his allies and contemplating death. The bad guys hold ALL the cards... things are about to get EVEN worse... The Dessad like guy is Phobius, who lives to cause fear and pain.

He may have lacked the "killer instinct", but even in his darkest hour, Quasar's stoic dealing with a depraved monster like Phobius is EFFING AWESOME!

I wish I could recall where I first read the quote - "Anyone can be brave, a hero is someone who is brave for a second longer, and then another second, and then another second."

As someone who loves cosmic marvel, especially when it deals with the abstracts, I really should try and get into Quasar. From what I've seen of him in Nova, he seems like a lovable character.

So far there's only one Quasar series that ended at 60 issues right?

Yes, that's the one.

Also Mark Gruenwald loved playing with the abstracts, he invented a good chunk of them; Infinity was his, as was Oblivion's promotion to the big four. Plus new Elders, the Dimension of Manifestations and many more...

I liked the one repeated panel of this. It was suitable.

Someone forgot their safeword though!

Ask yourself honestly: does that "proper one" comment really serve any purpose aside from annoying fans of Phyla?

Eh, Quasar was just a phase for Phyla. She's moved on to the next mantle.

Besides, the real Quasar is the guy from the Imperial Guard. "Neutron" my Aunt Fanny.

I'd forgotten all about the Imperial Guardsman using the name first, good catch! :)

Well, not FIRST first. The first Quasar was an ape mutated into a big bald human guy who fought Iron Man back in '75. But before Wendell, anyway.

Nope, that's pretty much what it's there for.

I'm a fan of the Wendell Quasar, I was never a fan of the Phyla incarnation.

I was just asserting the importance of the character who created the name, the legend, the reputation through his own efforts. Not the character who already had other extremely powerful wristband weapons who was given the Bands and the name for no apparent reason, and used them to create lethal weapons, which sort of defeated the point of Quasar.

Clearly someone at Marvel agreed with this POV since she didn't last more than what, two years? Before the original returned and she stopped using the Bands? As noted, Quasar was a phase for her, not even a destination.

Pure nasty trolling? Glad to see you're honest about it at least.

Is this even a real thing? I mean, does liking Phyla hinge on her brief tenure as Quasar? I like Bucky fine, but that doesn't stop me thinking of Steve as the proper Cap.

Oh give me a ruddy break. I was teasing, in what way was that "nasty" or "trolling"?

It's no different from anyone saying that Bruce Wayne is the proper Batman over Az-Bats.

Phyla was given the Quasar name solely to boost her character in a crossover event. It seems not to have taken.

I'm not saying "ANYONE WHO LIKES THE PHYLA VELL QUASAR IS CATEGORICALLY WRONG!"

I found the "One" count quite amusing (because of Phobius's "that is not the appropriate response!" reaction) and totally get where Quasar is coming from. He's not going to give Phobius the satisfaction of doing as he's told.

Then I re-read it a few times and thought, sheesh this guy (Phobius) calls him pretty boy way too many times.
The whole "Heh-heh, I guess that was 39 times - die now." is just really sad. (Which I suppose is evidence of who really won the exchange). I mean, really, if you want the guy dead there are other more direct and certain ways to accomplish that. *shakes head* Some villains.

I always thought Maelstrom and his minions were kind of lame (Deathurge notwithstanding), which just makes this moment more satisfying.

Oh there incredibly lame; Phobius the knock-off Desaad, Helio the wind manipulator, and the marvellously named strong guy Gronk. Deathurge was definitely cool though.

On the other hand Maelstrom DID manage to recruit the Weird Sisters; Truth, Charm and Beauty, and they were just freaky, and not just for being named after flavours of quark.

I'm trying to remember if I've ever seen him in anything else, but my experience reading cosmic Marvel is severely limited. Consider my interest piqued (and not just by tales of luxurious, blond hair). I don't suppose you know of any trades that feature him heavily?

He was a member of the Avengers for quite a while, but whilst his own series wasn't collected.

"Operation: Galactic Storm", a crossover event involving Quasar, the Avengers, Iron Man and others, was collected last year though.

Quasar 22, part 4 of the 7 part Cosmos in Collision.

It was around this point that someone very familiar to fans of the Phyla Quasar came onto the scene, but that's a posting for another day.

The 39 times is interesting, too, as I believe there's a legend/belief (Jewish, I think, but don't quote me on that) that whipping a man more than forty times will kill him, so punishments were kept to thirty-nine lashes, so as not to kill the person if the whipper's count was off by one...

From here

Jewish law forbade administering more than forty lashes, and the Pharisees had reduced the number to thirty-nine. St. Paul speaks of his scourging as being "forty less one." (2 Cor. 11:24) Among the Romans there was no such restraint and we can be certain that many did die as a result of the scourging, if not immediately, then later, from either infection or internal hemorrhaging. The evidence on the Shroud is that Jesus was struck excessively.

Thanks for posting this, it has always been one of my favorite scenes from Cosmos in Collision (one of my all time favorite comic book storylines).

I was just searching Quasar Cosmos in Collision in google today (I've been re-reading my Gruenwald stuff: mostly Quasar, Captain America, Squadron Supreme, and DP7) and came across this, so I thought I'd reply.

Yeah, Cosmos In Collision was a terrific storyline! Too bad they don't have it in trade, can't see why not!

This July 4th actually marks the 20 year anniversary of Quasar #1 (1989)!
