One of my FAVORITE bits from L&R. Aaaand now I'll have to queue it up on YouTube.

I've finally caved and started venturing into the vast wilderness of work that's the Hernandez Brothers and I just love, love, love Jaime's Maggie and Hopey and the just-ever-so-off-kilter world they inhabit. The timing, the humor, the graveness, the weird ambiguousness of EVERYTHING, the brilliant visual feeling everything has...and the careful emotional weight it all holds.

But I've really only gotten my hands on the newer collections -- I've never seen such an early strip and the difference in style's really surprised me!

I was in an antique store digging through the longboxes when I stumbled on two collections of Love& Rockets short stories, one by Jaime and one by Gilbert. With everything else I picked up there (mostly a lot of Shade The Changing Man and Lone Wolf And Cub), I could only afford one. I'd read Gilbert's Luba In America a few years back and wasn't impressed, so Jaime's it was.

Oh man I did not regret it in the least. It's pretty much all Maggie and Hopey stories from the first few issues, whether via Mechanics or Locas Tambien, it is all a great time.
